Where is the Best Steak in New York, New York?
Our interest in historic places and great steak took us to Frankie and Johnnie’s over on 37th Street for an early dinner. Housed in John Barrymore’s former brownstone, J & F’s offers some fine food, albeit for a price. Started with one of the day’s specials, a tomato arugula and fresh mozzarella salad that was expertly done. We really wanted to try the risotto w/porcini mushroom and asparagus, but didn’t want to fill up on oversized servings of pasta . Our waiter graciously offered to have the dish split between the two of us as an appetizer – it was just the right size and delicious. We both opted for the surf (HUGE lobster tail) and turf (filet mignon) with a few sides. The steak was done exactly right, just melted in your mouth. Couldn’t get over the size of that lobster tail – sweet and firm and oh so tasty. Waitstaff was attentive without being overbearing or making us feel we needed to hurry; they were extremely professional and accommodating. It’s a typical steakhouse atmosphere
I have been dining at Old Homestead for many years and, although the food is always first rate, the service can be a bit shoddy. On a recent visit with a large group during the holiday season I was very surprised to see that one of our favorite waiters was now employed at OH. We knew him as JC when he took care of us at Mark Joseph downtown but he jokingly advised me that at OH he is simply known as John. It was great to see him. He is a character and a truly wonderful hospitality professional. Even though he mentioned to us that he may be a casualty of staffing issues in the near future, I do hope to see him there again. OH is definitely taking a step in the right direction when it comes to service with more hires like John. See you soon JC.
Visiting New York on a rainy and cold night I decided to grab a quick bite of Itailian at the little spot across from my hotel. Walking in the place is smaller than what I am used to. Even after over looking the menu, nothing jumped out at me. So far I wasn’t impressed…. Then came out the food and WOW! For an anti-pasta, we chose the mac and cheese which was topped with lobster. Unbelievable. For my meal, I ordered off the specials and chose a parmasean crusted steak with a side of asparagus and fries. Wow! This was by far the best steak I have EVER had. I have dined at many of the much pricier chains only now to be let down. With my first bite, I wanted to melt. Really fabulous. For desert, I shared a tiramisu and it was incredible as well. I am definitely remembering this quant, hidden place for my next visit to NYC and sharing with others. The service was also outstanding with our server, Bianca. She was extremely attentive and knowledgable with the menu items. Defi
I recently took my wife and father here for a pre-christmas dinner. The inside of the restaurant is nice and clean with a modern decor. Not amazing to look at but it’s about the food primarily right? The prices are quite hefty but not too far above the prices we normally pay when going out. What was dissappointing however was the price is only for the steak, there are NO included sides. Instead, sides are priced at $9 each and even the sauce costs $2, kinda silly really. The steaks came out sitting plainly in the middle of white plates. Being the sides and sauces are seperated it leaves a plain boring presentation, just meat in the middle of the plate. The steaks were cooked *perfectly* and all three of us had a different preference. That part was nice as my wife and I are particular about it being cooked the way we asked. Overall my father loved it. He said his steak (porterhouse I believe) was excellent. Both my wife and I felt our filet mignon was good but by no means great. We also
Returned after not having been for at least a year or more and it’s still great! Needed a quick light meal after a day of shopping and having had a late lunch. We shared a salad and each had entree’s. DW had the scallops and I had the skate. Amazing perfecty cooked full of flavor and very nicely plated. A bottle of wine and we were all set. Both of us saying we couldn’t believe we waited so long to return. We’ll be back sooner rather than later. Also felt the prices were very reasonable.Pros + Great Food, good service, pleasant ambianceCons – We don’t live in Brooklyn
