The SceneLarge families, groups of adults, and couples all enjoying the food-lover’s delight. One can eat till they are filled, and flip a marker (red on one side, green on the other) to tell the waiter to stop. Sounds easy, but with the choices and quality, it’s hard to say no. The FoodThere is a large salad bar, plus a long steam table, filled with traditional dishes such as beans and rice, as well as baked fish dishes and even spaghetti in clam sauce. But the big draw is the grilled meats: at least twelve on weeknights, more on weekends. Beef predominates, from ribs to flank steak to sirloin. There is also lamb, spicy pork sausages, chicken, and turkey wrapped in bacon.

I can’t believe that no one has reviewed this restaurant for so long. We eat here a few times each year before going to the show. Bar layout is a bit awkward but everyone is pleasant and shifts spaces so you can get through. Seems to be alot of regulars but bartender treats everyone like a close friend. Lots of friendly conversation and advise for visitors to the city. Seems like there is always someone there who was referred by a city hotel. Always order fish except when pork dishes are on the menu. Pork isn’t a regular item but you can tell the chef likes it because of the care in preparation. The crusted grouper with lobster pierogies is wonderful. Ditto the lobster risotto. Seems like the servers have been there for a while – we recognize quite a few of them. Always good, professional service. Very knowledgeable about the menu and willing to ask if they can’t answer a question.

There’s little room for criticism at this cozy bistrot in South Side near the Birmingham bridge. I like the narrow hallway leading to the dining room, admired the decor with mirrors and dark, woody paneling that gave the restaurant the authentic feel of a neighborhood Parisian bistrot. Service performed like a well-oiled machine, professional more than friendly, (aloofness also reminiscent of French waiters who take their career seriously and are a far cry from the college student / struggling actor stereotype you typically find in restaurants stateside.) The bathrooms were clean and well decorated with provincial colors and upscale furnishings. The fact that it was raining (and when isn’t it lately in Pittsburgh?!) and dusky with the first fall scents and chilly air helped add to the romanticism of the experience. Too big a deal about tomato bisque. Most anywhere, tomato bisque is Campbell’s with a kick. I admit that the Sherry Bisque is nothing to brag about. Their food selections: well prepared and tasty. Not a place to go if you are in a festive or hyper mood. Young people are scared off by quiet- reserved atmosphere anywhere. BUT, high brow meals don’t go with Olive Garden setting. Personally I can’t take the noisy disorganized restaurants that most people wait in line for. You’ll get personal, polite attention at the Hyeholde. Presentation is magazine-like and tasty as well. Portions too small for the high price you pay . I’ve never been disappointed with the quality of food. Desserts are excellent . After discovering this restaurant 2 years ago, my wife and I have visited a number of times, some of them with friends or relatives. We’ve never been disappointed (nor have the people who’ve accompanied us) with the quality of the food in any way. It’s always delicious and well-presented. We stopped in early this past Saturday and the steak I had was perfect. I don’t have a great vocabulary for culinary review, but I think my saying that it was excellent-tasting and of a generous portion size should be enough. Sometimes it’s difficult for me to find a good steak nowadays but not at this restaurant.And however good the food is at any establishment, it always tastes considerably better when you’re treated well by the staff and management. The staff is always pleasant and attentive and almost every time I’ve been in, the owner stops by after the meal and makes sure that all was up to the usual quality.
