Where is the Best Singles Scene in Portland, Oregon?
Then where are the ladies? Without them, there is no singles scene. Each time I have been back, it seems to be more of a sausage fest then the last time. And the ones that actually do make it here have been exceptionally lame. Like most new PDX places, they either become too trendy or die trying. This place was great when it opened a couple years ago. Decor cool, atmosphere excellent, then through no fault of XV’s the hoards of idiots started showing up. There are a few pluses though. It has one of the better jukeboxes in Portland (not to be rivalled by the now defunct Players Club). Bartenders and service has always been top notch. Plus they know how to mix a mean drink. Keep it up guys! You are the only reason I come back to this place.Pros + jukebox, service, drinksCons – clientele
All of the food on the entire menu is only $3.50 – a great variety of typical McMenamins fare (salads, sandwiches, burgers). The cocktails are reasonably priced, too. I had an amaretto espresso concoction that was absolutely divine, especially considering the chilly evening. The cosmo was splendid as well. Service is also typical McMenamins – well-meaning but sketchy in the attention department.Pros + tasty foods, delicious drinks, funky areaCons – chilly, marginal service
There are so many great breakfast/brunch places in Portland that it’s hard to pick a favorite (Helser’s Tin Shed, Jam, Genie’s, Bread and Ink, Cafe du Berry, Junior’s all come quickly to mind). Topping my list at the moment is Crush. I’ve never been there at night when the hipsters allegedly arrive, but have had the Sunday brunch (9 to 3). The menu is reasonably varied, with classy breakfast choices on one side and some more lunch-brunch type selections like mac & cheese on the flip. I especially like the chilaquiles and the scrambles, some with meat and others vegetarian. Very flavorful with ingredients like Antique Cheddar (not sure what that means). They even get the little touches right — e.g., using sliced fennel on the sliced apple that garnishes most of the dishes. There’s also something I haven’t seen elsewhere in P-Town: free cornbread and toast, both self-serve. The Stumptown coffee (not free) is also self-serve. There’s amazing art throughout the place (apparently by the ow
Yawn, I want to like this bar because its so close to my house, the drinks are good, the food and atmosphere is nice, but god damn it the service is snide, and snubby. If you like being treated like a dirty little step child, like you did’nt grow up in Portland, and moved here last week like everyother hipster 20-30 something around here-you’ll love it. I’ll take any dive bar around here with real service instead. If you don’t like the service industry, don’t serve folks. I’ll chalk this place into the bad naughty pooty catagory where it can reside with the likes of Dots, Genies, and a few more. I’m not alone. A little more V, and a little less Vendetta toward your customers.Nuff said.Pros + good placeCons – bartenders need replacement
I have been going to Hall Street for as long as it has been in existence, which I think is over 20 years!! I can honestly say that I’ve NEVER had a bad meal there. On occassion, the service has been rather slow, but usually is commensurate with how busy they are—if you go on a wk. end , or Friday night , you are going to wait–even with reservations (which I would ALWAYS recommend here. This you will find AT ANY good popular place–which this is !! My complaint –when lunching with a friend yesterday{ 9/11/07} , was that at the end of our meal, we felt like we were being “hounded” by our server to pay the tab, and be on our way.!! This was a week-day afternoon, and they were not particularly busy. I did not like this, and wrote a “comment card” stating such and mailed it to the GM. This waiter was otherwise faultless.Pros + excellent food nice atmosphere, friendly staff , good parkingCons – inconsistent service depending on your server, cocktails excellent but overpriced
