Where is the Best Romantic Date Spot in Portland, Oregon?
I recently had out-of-town visitors – as my loft is too small to accommodate them, I reserved two rooms at the Benson Hotel for them to stay in. These are dear friends of mine and I wanted them close to me and I wanted them to be pampered.Regretfully, I made the reservation based on the Benson’s reputation and their impressive lobby. I really should have done more research. My friends did not really complain, but, when I went to viist them, I was appauled by the size of the room – it was just large enough to fit the bed. We couldn’t really visit there and went down to the lobby which had plenty of room. Several times, we asked to have some service there and felt we were treated poorly because we were dressed somewhat casually. While I really enjoyed the visit from my friends, I definitely will consider another hotel in the future. Pros + Nice lobby and locationCons – Small rooms, stuffy service, poor value
Positives: The view is amazing. The food is wonderful. Lounge will transfer your tab up to your table when the reservations are ready. AMAZING lobster bisque.Negatives: Price and service. The lounge was not very professional and were confused on how to make my drink (Kettle One Vodka on the rocks) Tough one, I know. They charge for a glass of soda water, as if everything else we are ordering isn’t enough. Our waiter started off strong and was very attentive. After our appetizers he began to drift…didn’t clear our plates for some time, had to ask another waiter for drinks and water because we had not been checked on in so long. We were given our bill and still wanted another glass of wine but we were not asked, the bill was just dropped and he took off. Finally we were able to flag him down (after 7-8 minutes) and order our wine. He made it a point to hurry a new bill over to us and once he saw me place my car in the folder he was on it like a hawk. I HATE when you get poor
I took my husband to dinner with friends for his birthday on December 30th and what a disappointment. While the service was impeccable, the filets for the price should have been a center cut, but instead it was an end cut with a lot of gristle. When we mentioned this to the manager that we were disappointed, he seemed to be very proud of the fact that they were using all of the filet including the tail. The Steak Diane was mediocre. It was a full cut filet, not butterflied, which didn’t allow for the flavors to permeate through the meat. The Lobster Bisque and Lobster Cocktail were out this world, as was soufles. I don’t think I would go back again, although we have been there other times and the food was superior; but we haven’t had filets or Steak Diane before.Frankly, we have better filets for much less at “average” restaurants, not “steakhouses”. Pros + Lobster Cocktail, Lobster Bisque, and service are OUTSTANDINGCons – FILET AND STEAK DIANE WERE UNACCEPTABLE AN
I think the Rose Test Gardens are absolutely beautiful. During the peak season of June & July I can’t imagine taking my girlfriend for a walk anywhere else. Had we not gotten engaged early in the year, this was my first choice as the spot to do it. Truly overwhelming and a place I bring all my summer visitors to visit.Bar none, the best rose garden in the country.
No more tableside cooking: Used to be five stars now four stars. New chef and no tableside cooking is a big change for us. The food is still very good and John Louie is the best waiter in Portland. I hope they bring back the tableside service. That is a big problem for us.Stu CookPros + best waiter in portland is John LouieCons – no more tableside cooking
