Where is the Best Power Lunch in Detroit, Michigan?
If you have been to other REAL Churrascarias you will be greatly dissappointed with this one. The food bar was grossly inadequate, only offering half of the items you normally see. The hot side dishes were only lukewarm and of poor selection (redskin potatoes, sauteed kale and black beans). They served us fried bananas instead of plantains and the breads were no better. To top it all off, the Gauchos had very little knowledge of the meats they were serving and how to slice them. The meats themselves were quite good, the only saving grace of the evening. Also, the desserts were done well, but I do not go to a Churrascaria for dessert! This establishment is as old as the hills, and presents itself as timeless in ambience, and excellence in food and service. It’s pricey, but that’s to be expected for the extra emphasis on quality. The entertainment is usually exceptional as well. This is a great place to meet as a “hang” with old friends! Oh yes, don’t forget the clam chowder!
The opportunity to try Mon Jin Lau finally happened last night when friends from California and I (a local) were doing a surprise bday for another amiga. Two weeks prior, I had read about their restaurant in a passed issue of Hour Detroit magazine while waiting in my dentist?s office. I found the family story very interesting; and reading some of the negatives comments below really shows how much some Chinese restaurant owners are. Coming from a Thai food establishment here, there?s nothing but appreciation and excitement for MJL. Complimentary valet parking was nice, The owner?s son were very good-looking and professional, staff was cool and so was the decor. But hands down, the best part was when the conga drummer and saxophone player came around to heighten things up?I beat the heck of that drum and I hope I get to do it again next time!
