Where is the best place to read aloud?
You can read anywhere. When my children were small we never left home without a satchel of books to take along in the car. The suburb in which we lived was divided into north and south by railroad tracks. Commuter trains roared by several times each hour and frequent mile-long freight trains created massive traffic backups. We often read while waiting for the trains to go by. Reading aloud has a wonderful way of calming restless children. I was always grateful to those thoughtful doctors and dentists who kept an ample supply of children’s books in their waiting rooms. For reading at home, however, choose a comfortable location and designate it as the “read-aloud” corner. An overstuffed chair, if you’re reading to just one child, is the perfect spot. Or perhaps the heirloom rocking chair in the nursery. When you’re reading to two or more children, you’ll need a cozy couch.
