Where is the Best Pan Asian Food in New York, New York?
I was first introduced to Pacific Echo several months ago when an out-of-town friend was in the city on business and recommended it. I enjoyed our experience there so much that I wanted to share it with my boyfriend. He and I arrived to Pacific Echo around 6:30 on a Thursday night and were seated immediately without a reservation. The service was impeccible from the very start of the meal when we were asked what drinks we’d like. I thoroughly enjoyed the Mango Martini! I find the food here delicious. The fish is fresh and tasty and the menu is rounded out by some unique and creative dishes. The tuna pizza not only looks good but is extremely light and flavorful. The shrimp tempura roll brings an complicated mingling of flavors to your mouth. I found that the food was so fresh and the flavors so pure that I didn’t need my regular soy sauce/ginger/wasabi garnishings. At the end of our meal we were treated to two fresh Mango mojitos. When we first heard about the restaurant, we were worried about the location and bad reviews about service. However, when we had called to make reservations they called us back immediately to make accomodations for us. Despite the remote locale, at arrival we were pleasantly surprised by the coziness of the place, the ecletic crowd, and the wonderful ambiance. The food was even more impressive. SImple, mostly organic ingredients, and deliciously preprared, our mouths salivated as we watched near by diners receive their dishes. The review regarding serivce was a complete farse, as we experienced attentive servers and warm smiles the entire night. The restuarant even broke out into a rendition of “Happy Birthday” for a near by diner. The flourless chocalate cake melted in our moths and we were tempted to lick the plates. I would recommend anybody to take the trip out to Red Hook and dine at this excellent establishment.
My husband and I went to NYC for my first time this past weekend. A reservation was made for us ahead of time at Tao. We arrived a little before our 7:30 p.m. reservation and waited in the bar area for about 15 minutes before we were seated upstairs. The drinks were outrageously expensive; I realize it’s NYC, but $7.50 for a beer…c’mon!Our food (chicken dumplings and shrimp pad thai) was excellent. Again, overpriced, but it was a special occasion so in hindsight, it was worth it. The two other complaints I have: The close proximity of the tables for two. We were stared at by the guy next to us for almost our entire meal. Pretty uncomfortable and makes it difficult to carry on a conversation, unless you want your neighbors, who are less than a foot away, to hear everything. And the bathrooms need to have “Men” and “Women” labeled underneath the “Ying” and “Yang”. It would be my guess that the majority of people don’t know which is which, and I walked into the men’s bathroom
I just had dinner at Grill 21 with my non-Filipino friends and I think it’s the best place to showcase real Filipino food with decent presentation that won’t intimidate the non-native. I’ve tried Cendrillon but the food was over priced and I couldn’t really say it was Filipino – plus flavor wasn’t that great. Kuma Inn is more Thai, Pan-Asian, again – not really Filipino. You can’t go wrong with Grill 21’s BBQ dishes and laing. It has the traditional Filipino flavor and is presented very well so you can be proud to bring your friends over and say they’ve tried truly Philippine cuisine. Food was reasonably priced so I was very happy. Dessert wasn’t that great though so you’re better off taking them to the Baskin Robbins across the street afterwards. The one thing working against Bistro 33 is its size- the place is downright small. That being said, the service is pretty good, the specialty cocktails are tasty, the ambiance is nice, but it’s the food that takes it to the next level. The sushi rolls are inventive combinations that work well together. I heart a place that can serve duck that has a crispy skin but isn’t greasy. The special foi gras burger was so decadent I just might burst a vein if I had it more than twice a year. None-too-pleased with the lamb chops though; they were prepared too rare for me. Outer boro is the place to go for good eats. Hop on the N and go on an adventure.Pros + Great sushi rolls, great specials.Cons – Quite small, not good for parties larger than 4.
