Where is the Best Mexican Food in Portland, Oregon?
La Calaca Comelona has come a long way since it’s little spot on 11th, but they still won’t serve you a burrito (and this is a good thing). So the crickets aren’t for the faint of heart (even though they’re tasty), but all of the grilled dishes are absolutely to-die-for and the blackberry-pear mole is inspired deliciousness (even if a bit over-priced, in my opinion). Most dishes are also served with fresh onion, cilantro, and lime – very tasty additions to the grilled dishes or tasty tacos. This place also makes one of the *best* mojitos I’ve ever had, if Kyle is working the bar.To the woman upset that she wasn’t allowed to sit on the patio: trust me, you weren’t missing much. The seats out there are not particularly comfortable or solid and the patio itself is not very well leveled and maintained. Your little one could have easily ended up toppling into the pond after tripping on one of the poorly installed rocks in the patio. Sure, it’s nice to be in the sunshine on a lovely Port
This is a very friendly restaurant that has very friendly and attentive service. The appetizer “platter” is big and has a nice variety. The problem is that it’s not truly Mexican, but tailored for American Tex-Mex. As far as Mexican-American comfort food goes, they do a decent job. The refried beans and Mexican rice that you recieve with your entree are all right. As far as the main part of your entree….choose well. The tamales are horrible, but the Chile Colorado enchiladas are good as long as you order them later in the evening so they become more tender (the longer they cook over the evening the more tender they become). The service is very good, as there is so much wait staff to attend to you. Pros + Attentive service, Tex-Mex comfort foodCons – Weak margaritas, Tamales
Listen,La Bonita makes the best burritos in Portland, OR. Their cuisine’s superiority doesn’t manifest in their portion size (which is large), nor does it matter with their prices (which are very affordable). La Bonita makes the best burritos in Portland because their kitchen does what any exceptional kitchen does. They prepare dishes from scratch, they cook with a home-style, and their quality shows up every single time.If someone didn’t enjoy their cuisine from La Bonita, I strongly suggest they either 1) Go back and try it again 2)Shut Up OR 3)Quit comparing magnificent affordable meals to an “Albertsons Enchilada Dinner.”Man, They’re nice folks, too.Pros + Fast, Tasty, Cheap, AuthenticCons – No Draft Beer
This place has the best of both worlds. Lots of traditional flavors, like their amazing fish tacos, red chile enchiladas, and pico salsa. As for Nuevo Latino, Mark Lopez the owner of Baja Grill worked for the Great Chile Guru Mark Miller himself. My personal favorite is the Grilled Chicken Burrito. While it sounds ordinary I assure you their lack of creativity naming this masterpiece was all saved up for the actual culinary talent that created such an incredible burrito. Inside the burrito they use citrus marinated grilled chicken, black beans in a chipotle bbq sauce, cilantro lime pesto rice, pico salsa, plus cheddar and jack cheese.I am tired of the bland chain Fresh-Mex type places and the so-so plates full of slop covered with cheese that most Mexican restaurants in Portland offer. If you are ever downtown during lunch hour this is THE place to eat!Pros + Locally Owned, They Cater too!, Best Salsa Bar aroundCons – Open Lunch only M-F, Street parking , Only 1 loca
My husband and I ate here last night (Cinco de Mayo). We had a gift certificate, but were a little leery of the place, having read so many poor reviews here on Citysearch. May 5th is our anniversary, so we wanted to celebrate with a special dinner, but were a little worried that the place would be crazed with ‘Cinco de Drinko’ goers..It was wonderful! We had booked a table and were seated immediately, the food was flavorful, fresh and beautiful, and the portions not at all as small as I had feared, after reading other reviews here. We ordered one appetizer to share and one entree each and were perfectly full by the time we were done. The ambiance also was great – they had a DJ and the decor was warm and comfortable.I can only imagine that other reviewers were hoping for a more mainstream version of a Mexican restaurant: huge portions you have to take home, endless chips etc. It’s not that. It’s not cheap either, but the food is well worth the price – some of the best Mexican food e
