Where is the Best Mexican Food in Portland, Oregon?

The first time we went to Oba, we had a three-course meal that was pretty good– but the service was inattentive and bordering on rude. The second time we went was amazing. We ordered appetizers (the gazpacho was so unique and refreshing on a hot summer day) and drinks. Their main room was closed for an event, so we sat in the crowded bar. We had no trouble finding a quaint window seat; when we were asked to move to accommodate a 10-top, we did so gladly. When we were asked to move a second time, our $60+ bill (for two people) was taken care of by management! Now that’s what I call good service.Pros + Very original menu, good dinner packagesCons – Lack of parking, erratic waitstaff

My wife and I were first time diners today for brunch. Our neighbors eat here often and have recommended it to us previously. I had hesitated to go mostly due to some of the low ratings given by others on this site. Big mistake. Like movie reviews, feedback is dependent solely on the tastes and experiences of the reviewer. I agree whole-heartedly with the other reviews stating that this is not a place for the Chevy’s crowd who enjoys the typical Americanized platter of a generic entree with runny beans and orange rice all covered with gobs of melted cheese. This is AUTHENTIC Mexican food mis amigos. We have been off the beaten path in all places Mexico (Cabo, PV, Troncones, etc) and this food is up there with some of the best. Everything is made with FRESH local ingredients…from the trio of salsa (adobo, serrano, tomatillo) to the main courses this place is amazing. Our server asked if it was our first time there and sent out a complimentary appetizer which we happily ate in addition

I went to this place for lunch with my husband, who goes once a week or so because it’s close to his job. We both ordered the Tex Mex pork burrito, his came with beans and I got the rice. The chips are thicker than most places which was kinda nice, they’re very crunchy, but also very greasy. The salsa that came with the chips was great. The two servers who helped us were very friendly. Our daughter really liked looking at all of the stuffed animals on the wall and the marionettes over the bar. The burritos seemed more like enchiladas to me, covered with sauce and melted cheese, but whatever. There was a good amount of meat in the burrito and it had a good flavor, spicy but not too spicy. The beans and rice however, were very bland, no seasonings to speak of at all! I would go back and try something different because the staff and atmosphere were good and the prices were reasonable.Pros + great atmosphere, good chipsCons – side dishes are bland

Stick to the Salvadoran platters, guacamole and Mexican hot chocolate and you will be happy you went. Leave the more “Mexican” part of the menu – that’s what taquerias are for. A platter for 2 with cheese bread, papusa, plantano and cream…that’s all you need. casual atmosphere, take a while for the check to come so just be ready to relax.Pros + price, salvadoran part of menu, guacamole menuCons – mexican part of menu

Ate here tonight because of the over all positive reviews. Good food, from the fried egg enchilada down to the bean dip – not the best, but definately worth seeing for yourself if it hits the spot. The chips and salsa are the blandest I’ve ever had (which is why we got bean dip) – think tomato and jalepeno puree with chips from safeway. Cadillac margaritas were decent. This is a good casual Mexican spot you could go to on a whim when you’re having a craving. I’ll still keep Pepita’s as my main Mexican place though. Now on to the service – I had to get up and ask for my bean dip after waiting for 10 painful minutes, I did so watching my waitress sitting with either the owner or a regular at a table. I was pretty much not going to tip well after that. BUT, the waitress had noted to remove olives from my girlfriends burritos and than noted to ommit them from other food we had (a logical, but not guaranteed courtesy). Secondly when we got the margaritas she asked if we wanted to
