Where is the Best Mexican Food in Portland, Oregon?
I go here a couple of times a month, it’s close to my office, and I always get the Relleno Burrito. I find it super tasty and full of flavor, I add some of the red sauce to the inside. Sometimes I want to try something else but I love the Relleno Burrito too much. I love the quick service and the cheapness of the food. The quality isn’t A+ but it is very good. The thing I don’t like is that I often have to call and call and call because they ignore their phone and I don’t like standing around waiting for my burrito. Also I always eat the whole thing and always want to take a nap by about 2:00 because I’m so full of deliciousness. Some of my coworkers just eat half of one but I lack their willpower.Pros + Cheap, FastCons – Parking, Service, Ambiance
Recently an Oregonian review claimed that there was no New Mexican food in Portland other than the new place being reviewed. No so. Adobe Rose has been serving up New Mexico dishes for 20 years in Sellwood-Moreland. It’s a neighborhood place, and many if not most of the customers are on a first-name basis with Larry and Terry, the friendly owners who switch off as waiter and chef. We walk in the door and they start making our drink order. We lived in New Mexico, and I’ll admit that the food is a compromise on the “real” stuff, but most Portlanders probably would not take all that readily to the volcanic flavors of truly authentic fare from a non-chain New Mexico restaurant. It may not be quite the same stuff as Don Juan’s Cocina in Socorro, NM, but their chili rellenos and carne adovada measure up well, and the sopapillas are fine. They make everything fresh in house except (to my knowledge) the tamales, which are good anyway. Minimal ambience, but at least they didn’t do some
I’m not sure how the last reviewer picked this place based on “mostly positive reviews”. If you look at the ratings, they have 18 negative and only 7 positive. That should give anyone an idea of what you are in for. We have lived nearby for 20 years, and yes the restaurant has changed. Several years ago the prices started to rapidly climb and the food quality started to falter (not sure if the ownership changed) . Today, the appeal here is the fact they can take large groups and are kid friendly. The prices are much higher than most Mexican restaurants, in fact too high, while the food quality is average at best. The margaritas have never been very good, but are served in a large tumbler so you think you are getting allot for your money. The portion sizes are also smaller than they used to be. I have never had any issues with the service, and the food is always served very quickly. With the high prices and average food, I had to give a rating of only 2 stars, Pros + lots of seating
I’m torn about this place. My partner and I have gone there on several occasions and after the first visit we quickly decided NEVER to order their margaritas again. At $8 each, you expect a little . . . I don’t know . . . tequila! But instead our drinks were just watered-down glasses of margarita mix. We also ordered the salmon tacos (which they’re supposedly “known” for) and the spicy ground beef tacos. The salmon tacos were nothing special at all – would never order them again. But their spicy ground beef tacos are absolutely THE BEST. So we have found ourselves going back there repeatedly – but only for the spicy ground beef tacos. So I guess my opinion is . . . spicy ground beef tacos – YES! The rest of the place . . . mediocre at best.Pros + Spicy ground beef tacosCons – Ambiance, Margaritas
