Where is the Best Mexican Food in Albuquerque, New Mexico?

I lived in Albuquerque for 28 yrs, and whenever I go back, the first stop is Los Cuates. It’s got all the makings of a good New Mexican kitchen, cheap plastic tablecloths, brightly painted walls, a basket of sopas with a honey container ready to deploy on each table. The Carne Adobada is to die for, but you can’t go too far wrong. Service is good, there’s lots of noisy kids, and a great deal of hustle and bustle, but if you’re looking for the real stuff, Los Cuates is where its at.The only other competition in Albuquerque is M&J’s downtown, and perhaps Sadies on N. Fourth (they lost some of the essentials (plastic tablecloths, tacky wall decor when they moved from the bowling alley, but the green chile is still some of the hottest and most flavorful , and you’ll NEVER go away hungry!).JohnPros + Fast service, Great Value, Authentic NM foodCons – Noisy, Crowded

I’m sitting in Rochester NY eating a quite good tamale a friend brought me after a recent trip to Dallas. After the first bite, I said, “This isn’t as good as that place in New Mexico. What was it called?” The other tamale eater in the household immediately replied, “El Modelo.” Ahhh, yes, El Modelo. How could I forget the name of the place that serves the BEST authentic food in Albuquerque. If you’re within 50 miles, you gotta get there! Check your cholesterol counters and low fat diet plans at the door. Try the two chile rellenos stuffed into a tortilla with who knows what else on top. You won’t need to eat again for two days. Think of me longing to be there again.

I have yet to find a place here in Kansas City that can make sopapillas the right way. Born and raised in New Mexico until I was 15. Going to Taco Sal’s was a weekly trip. There used to be a dance studio a few doors down that I attened as a little girl. On our breaks we used to go down to Taco Sal’s for a sopapilla. You were always welcomed with a “Hi Doll” and the kids got to pick a lolly pop from the Hot Air Balloon on the way out. Every time I am in New Mexico that is the one place I stop for good food.

I have called Eloy’s two times to place an order for pick up. Two times I have been placed on hold and the person on the other end never came back after 5+ minutes to take my order. Also, when I tried to meet my wife there for lunch, they would not seat me until she was there. Hint, just say you are by yourself and then you will get seated and your wife can join you later. Nice policy Eloys–NOT!
