Where is the Best Live Music Venue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania?
I went to Zanzibar for jazz one night and go back repeatedly. It’s a friendly though casual place with the right mix of entertainment, a helpful and very top-notch staff and innovative menu. Where else can you get Eggs Zanzibar? Fantastic Sunday brunch. Outstanding menu in general, shows flair and a nice mix, nouvelle Cajun. The Bartenders always outdo themselves in making you feel welcome, as do the rest of the staff. Drinks are always made as requested, delivered with a smile. Great mix of clientele, younger crowd on Latin nights. Go for the jazz. You’ll go back again for everything! Try Zanzibar in Wilmington, too. I really enjoyed Grape Street Philadelphia. Manayunk is a really great neighborhood, even made a native New Yorker like myself want to move out here. It’s the best of both worlds, one venue is dj’s for those who like to dance, and a live band for those who are servants to rock. My only gripe with the whole experience was at 10 minutes to closing, they put on a song , played the first 10 seconds, and flipped the lights on, signaling it was time to go. It was very abrupt, and frankly a really crap way to end a night. I also had 3 drinks, all margaritas, and I was charged 3 different prices by 3 different bartenders. They were good,but sort of overpriced for what I understand is Philly standard. Most nights, attending the north star is a pleasurable experience: friendly staff, good beer, and tasty (yet somewhat overpriced) food. An all ages show I recently attended however, was not so pleasurable. The bar in the band room served only soda for the benifit of the estimated 10 actual underage patrons, forcing the rest of us to sqeeze into the overcrowded front bar – which was crowded to the point that you felt like an alcholic for trying so hard to get a beer.
It’s crowded and filled with 20-30 year old drunks all having a good sloppy time of it. Good Irish bands and beer on the first floor, loud talented cover bands and beer on the second and a third floor for talking and drinking more beer. Nice selection on tap and the shots are decent too. Lots of bachelorette parties with girls who drink beer too. Bouncers don’t drink beer but are good keeping the peace with a crowd that doesn’t give much trouble. From a guy’s perspective it’s great for just blowing off some steam with friends and drinking beer. And, for those so inclined, if you want to wake up the next morning with a stranger… no problem, no problem at all.
