So in the heart of Austin party zone down an alley that looks unclean is the entrance to Speakeasy. You walk in this poorly designed club where you are ushered to walk by the bar in a small cramped place once the club gets going. You see guests from college hipsters, old bikers with ridiculouly long bleached hair (dudes), to the I’m still cool yuppy crowd out before their babysitter time is up.Downstairs is just not very nice and it looks like part is under construction (I hope). You then walk up 3 flights to the roof where a Miami feel starts (so out of place with downstairs). Kind of nice albeit the fans don’t help with the heat at all.Note – get misters. Now.We sat with friends for a party and were moved across the polace to a new seating that opened up….2 chairs to us. Why we listened to the manager I have no idea. They seem young. Our waitress would squeeze up to the table with our special order drink and basically stood with her behind in one person’s face. Uh, hel
There is a reason why this place gets crowded and the that reason would be the Spazmatics on Wednesday night! Other than the Spazmatics, the best bartender in Austin works here and his name would be Sanchez! Find him and you will never opt for another bartender ever. Just tell him what flavors you like and he’ll craft the perfect martini for you. Some of my favorite drinks (the ‘Marilyn Monroe’ and ‘Berry Shizzle’) were made up by him and can’t not walk down 4th street without stopping by to get one before the night is over! The atmosphere is chill on nights other than Wednesday. If you’re ever on 4th, don’t pass up this bar! Pros + Custom tailored martinis to your taste, chill on nights other than WednesdaysCons – Cougar night on Wednesday! Come early on Wed if you want a good seat
If you are looking for some outstanding music, large selection of on tap beer and margaritas to quench your hot summer thirst, then head east on 1825 to the quaint town of Plfugerville. The locals are friendly and quite lucky to have this neighbiorhood venue in their own backyard. The music line up is always phenomenal, karaoke on Thusday nights, ladies night on Wednesdays, no cover, great drink specials. If you are tired of the 6th street scene, head out to Hanover’s and enjoy some down home fun and dancing!Pros + dancing, best live music, friendlyCons – + beer prices, location
I don’t know why I was surprised, but even though it is a chain bar (something I usually avoid) it seemed to have such promise. It is a pub after all–how franchised could it be?Too much attitude at the door, turning away casually dressed folk (some in shorts, some in tanks–it was almost 100 degrees outside after all) for being too casual–at a pub?? In Austin?? Bad start. The beer selection was pretty good, and they poured my Guinness properly, but it took FOREVER to get the attention of the server, who was chatting with another staff member while I waited, high and dry. Bad too. The pint, while poured correctly, didn’t taste all that great. Second pint of Bass tasted fine. When I ordered some food (jalapeno poppers, skins) and offered a credit card to start a tab, I was asked for my license number! Not a glance at my license, to check my identity (which would have been fine), but the number, so it could be entered along with my Amex number on my tab. Card was given back
