Where is the Best Late-Night Dining in Austin, Texas?
RUDE, RUDE, RUDE! I have been going to the Malaga for the past three years and have very much enjoyed it. I was eager to bring friends of mine one recent evening. However, that evening ruined it for me. My friends and I came in and were shown a table. As simple as that. When we said we were not going to order food, the waitress became visibly annoyed and left. A minute later, the host (the same that gave us the table) told us we had to wait at the front until a space was free at the bar because tables were reserved for meals. This was not mentioned by him when he gave us the table nor was it written anywhere. So I asked if we could wait at the table instead of moving twice seeing it was his mistake. He said fine then came back with two customers and told us to get out. It got ugly very quickly when I got angry and he threatened to get the police. We put him to the challenge. He left for a good 5-10 minutes while people were piling at the door and came back without the police. Meanwhile
This is a solid 4 star breakfast/lunch place. The food is good and the service good but nothing here is great. I mean the subpar wiat room next to the sometimes stinky bathroom – not to mention the limited parking and the wait…well you expect more. The specials are definitely where it is at as I feel the are the freshest but I am a fan of the taco breakfast. Not huge portions and occassionally the wait staff will be smug; what is up with that in Austin? – anyway the wait has never been too long and the food service is quick so you are eating not long after you order. Wish is was a more well rounded breakfast menu or at least the pancake/french toast was a little better than average. My wife is a big fan of the the Queso Omelette.
My wife and I have driven by this place many times and never knew it was there. We were walking downtown and stumbled on to it and decided to check it out. The restaurant is small and narrow in the front with tables for two, and towards the back opens up for tables with 4 or more guests. It has a very chill eclectic vibe to it but not too trendy. We sampled their baked mussel clams (very good; ask for the spicy version), seaweed salad, and miso soup – all good. I had the 15 piece sashim combo and my wife had the Spicy Tekka Don (spicy sashimi tuna over rice) and split an order of spicy tuna roll. The Spicy Tekka Don was fantastic and very filling – we were very surprised by the portion (enough for two). The sashimi combo was good but not the best Ive had (Musashino). The spicy tuna roll was bland after having the tekka don. Overall the experience was great. The wait staff was prompt and courteous. We have been back since and really enjoy. I would recommend this place for a ca
This is the place to get fresh food. It’s not on a conveyer belt waiting for you to come and get it. They wait until you get there, find out what you want and fix it the way you want it. This is truly a Texas tradition that Texans can be proud of. The secret is…there are thousands of them, not just in Austin. This Houstonite is not sure why they didn’t make the list there!!!Pros + Made to order.Cons – Sometimes the wait.
