Where is the Best Irish Pub in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania?
Mmmmm, I ordered Fish and Chips, and the 20th street sampler, wash it down with a Hoegaarden and you have instant success. I ate here with a VERY large group (about 32 people) and we all had a great time, our special guests we were treating enjoyed themselves as well. The atmosphere is great and the food is too, you gotta try this place.Pros + Fast service, great food, CHEAPCons – there are none
We had so many great meals in Ireland and have been so disappointed by many supposedly Irish restaurants in Philly. (Chicken parmesan, cheesesteaks, where’s the Irish food on these menus?) But Tir Na Nog is the closest we’ve gotten so far. The cottage pie and shepherd’s pie are as good as what we had in Dublin. The atmosphere is terrific, too. Great place to have a Guinness with friends and relax. Suggestion for the Tir Na Nog chef: Put some boxy on your menu. Not one single Irish restaurant in Philly has good boxty (crepe-like dishes with savory fillings). I stopped there on a recent Wednesday evening…I sat at the bar to eat & drink. The bar was only half full, but it took the bartender, a middle aged man, about 10 minutes to approach me for my first drink. He then did not return to me for the rest of the HOUR that I sat there, soon needing another drink. He was too busy socializing with patrons on the other side of the bar. While I was waiting, I saw two different employees go to the free happy hour buffet that was set up and took & ate food using their hands and did not use the tongs that were sitting by the buffet. During this time, I flagged down a waitress and ordered the lobster. The waitress was very nice and the food was good…the large tasty lobster came with bread, veggies and a baked potato. I could have used another beer to wash it all down, but it was not going to happen with the bartender on duty unless I got up or yelled for him. I finished my food, paid, and went to another bar for the drink I needed. I like
This place is a sports fan dream, they have a ton of nice big tv’s with evry gane that is on the day your there. The Male bartenders are rude, but the female servers and bartenders are cute and very nice. The food is terrible, unless your getting wings, the fries are good too, but dont try anty of the specialty items because they are over priced ill prepared, and down right gross and overly greesy and overpriced. They have an outstanding selction of bottled beers, overpriced for some but super cheap for others, I was there on a saturday and went to there upstairs bar where they had a dj, he was on of the best dj’s I’ve herad in a reguler bar, he played a excellent mix of hip hop, rock and oldies, and seemed too good for a nieighborhood bar, i alos heard rthe friday night dj is excellent too. The furniture upstairs was falling apart, and the bartender was very nice to me but was impatient with my girl and her friends when they had some questions for her she walked away from them, and
While I love British pubs typically I don’t usually have too many high expectations, but at the Dark Horse I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food, the fish and chips a standard british staples at most pubs can endup greasy, heavy and cafeteria like but here they were not. Our appetizer of calamari had a delicate cornmeal crust on it-and not greasy or heavy-actually very delicate, and the accompanying sauce was delicious. Our fish and chips had a lovely crispy batter and and the fish was moist and flaky and the tartar sauce was unique and savory. We had started our meal with a few pints, a Strongbow Cider-nicely chilled and fresh as a dewy meadow, and my hubby says his tap pint of Guiness-was served perfectly not too warm, too cold, or from a can, was one of the better ones hes had.
