Where is the Best Ice Cream in Detroit, Michigan?
As a new resident in Michigan, I was unfamiliar with the Cold Stone Creamery but glad I made the visit. I was surprised that before I placed my order I was asked if I have ever visited. After responding “no”, the (overly?) friendly clerk explained the basics: All the ice cream was made from a ‘base’ recipe; once a flavor was chosen the server would scoop up the ice cream onto a cold slab; various ingredients could be added. A la ice cream made to order. Of course, the store already has some pre-determined flavors to make things easier for those daunted by the seemingly endless choices. Great quality ice cream and although a little pricey, it’s not unreasonable considering the niche this non-typical ice cream store offers to its customers. Definitely a must when friends are in town or to cap off an evening with a loved one(s).Pros + delicious ice cream, unique, serviceCons – price, texture
I remember as a kid when this place only sold buttermilk at the side of the road in the middle of the countryside…ALL flavors of ice cream are fantastic, but you MUST try the butter pecan. It consistently wins out all other brands in local contests, and for good reason. Buttermilk lovers, listen–you’ll never buy that sour stuff sold by others again. The chocolate milk is great, too, and I’ve given my kids and now my grandkids drinks of it as a treat. The restaurant in Novi has both a store area and a small country restaurant. The restaurant is quaint, friendly and inexpensive.Pros + Fantastic ice cream, Delicious Buttermilk, Dreamy chocolate milkCons – Limited distribution
My Grandpa used to take the family for ice cream after church back in the 50’s to the Alinosi in Detroit. Wish I could’ve been there. The last one, now Great Cakes featuring Alinosi in Grosse Ponte, has pictures that allow you a glimpse of that bygone era – gorgeous window displays, long counters, uniformed staff, bouquets of flowers… glass cases full of chocolates and candies… and delectable ice cream. The Food Network did a special on Alinosi, after they won Best Spumoni (pistachio, rum, and fruit flavors) ice cream in a national contest. It rocks. I get the Alinosi Fantasy for my birthday every year – any 6 scoops with any toppings while “Happy Birthday” plays on the jukebox. Whitehouse Cherry, Banana, and Raspberry Royale are a few of my faves. Great sorberts too. Next time you’re on the East Side.. get some ice cream!!Pros + seating at counter, menus, karaoke nightCons – location
