Where is the Best Hamburger in Portland, Oregon?
So, I have been coming to Char Burger ever since I was a kid wtih my Grandma. It was THE place to stop on the way through the gorge and I continue to go out of my way to go here for breakfast. The view of the gorge is really the only place to really sit inside any day of the year and enjoy what the gorge has to offer. Cold and rainy or bright and sunny – it’s a ‘gorgeous’ view. If you sit in just the right place, the food won’t matter.Regards to food, I have never in 25 years had a bad food experience. There’s lots of it and it’s good, old-fashioned diner fare. You will get a surly, burly person at the counter usually. Get over it. It’s part of the charm to get a real, true person who has a life and isn’t afraid to live it right there in front of you without a corporate smile rule or ‘professional’ service worker training. This place is truly excellent. I don’t know how I spent so many years eating at Bluehour, Paley’s Place and other established PDX favorites without trying Serratto. My partner and I are self-proclaimed foodies, having eaten all over PDX, the US, and the world. We have now been to Serratto three times – just the two of us, with another couple, and in a group – and every time it has been a great dining experience. Every time has been a different experience, but always a great one. It’s as if Serratto scans your mood on the way in the door, and then has this chameleon-like ability to adapt to it.The halibut, which a friend ordered and loved, was the least fishy I have ever eaten in my life. I don’t love fish, but I would definitely order that dish again. Same for the tuna appetizer, which they pushed hard one night – it didn’t sound great to me, but it was amazing, and seemed like a bargain compared to the cost of that much tuna at a sushi restaurant. Another new chef as of June 2008. Prices are inappropriate: $35 for a ribeye steak (that’s ribeye, not filet), $15 for a bowl of fish stew, $20 for risotto with green peas, $14 for a bacon cheeseburger. On the lunch menu, spaghetti with a fresh tomato sauce is $16. Seriously. The food tastes pretty good, but the prices for relatively common dishes have become insulting. The chopped salad for $14 contains one slice of chopped bacon, about two ounces of chicken, and maybe an ounce of ham. It does arrive with two deviled egg halves, however, that are quite tasty.Otherwise, the outdoor garden is more beautiful than ever, and their cocktails are about the same price as you’d expect in any upscale venue. There is too much hype about Burgerville. I have lived in many other states and have had The best. Whatburger, IN and Out, Sonic, and Jonny Rockets. I guess this is the best Portland has to offer.I did enjoy the walla walla onion rings. But they are limited in time. What su*ks is that they do not offer onion rings after the walla walla season has ended. At least give us regular onions to hold us down.The buns are small and the fries s*ck. Too soggy.The worst part is the employees hang out with you and eat. Is there an Employee breakroom somewhere?Plus it seems like it is a hassle to drive into the parking lot. Cinetopia is the best. It’s a little spendy, $15 for living room seating, but well worth the money. The seats are roomy, leather, with ottomans. You can eat dinner and drink wine or beer in these theaters. They have musicians in there playing on some nights. Once you go here it is hard to go to a normal theater! The only downfall, they can get really busy, especially on opening weekends and I have been often an hour or earlier before the movie started and it’s already sold out. I have since learned my lesson and bought online. Though if you do that, you still need to get there early to get a decent seat. Also, the food is a little high priced then I am comfortable with, for the amount that you get. Popcorn is delish though, they even have a butter bar with different flavors. WORTH IT!
