Where is the Best Hamburger in Charleston, South Carolina?

Melvin’s is one of the original 5 Bessinger brothers bar-b-que restaurants in SC. They are carrying on the traditional family recipe for bar-b-que. They use a mustard base for their sauce which is primarily indigenous to this state. The food is good, the ambience average, cleanliness exceptional and the prices are in line. The only real complaint is the help, usually lackluster and with the mentality of “rocket scientists”. They could use a course in “southern hospitality”. However the food far outstrips the minus of the help. I would recommend this as a decent Friday night restaurant for a family night out.

The smell of the smoker fills your nostrils with a wonderful odor as you drive through the parking lot. The only thing better than the smell is the taste of the ribs falling off the bone onto your tongue. Wow! Tender and delicious. The pulled pork, chicken and brisket are to die for. If you want something lighter there are unique salads and sides to choose from. While you’re munching on the ribs, do not miss the Mac N Cheese. Ron has put something like five different cheeses onto those large tender zitis. Try crumbling a little bacon onto that and heaven help you. They have a multitude of different beers on tap as well as a large assortment of local beers in the bottle. They are also know for their bourbons. If you go later, they have blues and jazz artists three to five times a week. A wonderful place to come and hang out. They have large screen televsions all over and the NFL football packages as well as the college games. Go and enjoy the Down Home feeling and tickle

Wow! Holy Moly! Honestly dude, you have a lot of nerve calling your waitress a neurotic liar. I just so happened to be sitting at the bar when your family made a scene, in the middle of a ridiculously busy summer day, mind you. I was sitting at the corner of the bar and witnessed the drama unfold firsthand. First of all, what looked like a young teenage female, attempted to order a drink from the waitress. When the waitress asked for her ID, the girl immaturely rolled her eyes, huffed and puffed, and didn’t even acknowlege the waitress. The waitress then checked the other two IDs. No sooner than when the waitess turned to walk away, did the young girl say (loud enough to be heard by the table next to them, myself, and the bartenders), “What a b$tch.” Seriously, you need to educated that youngin on how to behave in a restaurant. If you talk to the staff like that, you get kicked out. Being with your family has nothing to do with it. Behavior like that should not be tolerated

I have tried several items on this menu and everything is totally awesome from the flavors to the presentation. I never feel crowded or rushed when I dine here and I am usually by myself. I have had the fish taco’s on numerous occasions. I have even gotten sauce from one item mixed together with sauce from another item for my chicken wing appetizers. Wait staff and bartenders are all really knowledgeable about the menu items.Pros + Great Wait staff, bartenders and Chef’sCons – Dining alone on business trips

The cherry point shrimp were fresh and exceptionally good. Overall the food was very good – the prices were reasonable. We were much impressed with the food and the warmth of the proprietors and servers. The dining was quiet and as we remember devoid of loud offensive sounds.
