Where is the Best Free Attraction in Minneapolis, Minnesota?
The quality of the collection at the Minneapolis Art Institute rivals any in the country, yet it is small enough to see in a day without getting too overwhelmed. The docents and staff are friendly, the crowd relaxed and unassuming, the restaurant and coffee shop is good too. You can take pictures of any piece in their permanent collection, so…
In the spring, summer, and fall I love to walk around Lake Calhoun, especially at sunset. It is beautiful and peaceful. Sometimes there is so much going on, but I love it. I love all the people and activity. Sometimes it is very quiet and there are not very many people, and I love the solitude. In the winter it is really neat to ice skate on one of the lakes, and I had a friend tell me she played “ice” croquet – which is bound to be a good time. There isn’t a chain of lakes anywhere else. It is truly a treasure.
Every 4th of July, my whole family gets together to go camping for 3 or 4 days at Baker Park. We continue to go there because it is convenient, clean, and lots of fun! They have big camp sites and pretty nice showers and bathrooms too. Make sure to bring your bicycle or rollerblades because they have really nice bike paths around the campground and across the street. They have 2 beaches with canoes and paddleboats for rent. They have a big playground for children. They also have nice BBQ areas by the beach. If you have a boat, bring it! You can go waterskiing, tubing, boating, fishing and anything else you like to do. It is a big campground and is always filled during the 4th of July. I believe the closest place to see fireworks though would be in the town of Delano. Give Baker Park a try!Pros + Large sites, nice bike paths, convenientCons – leeches
The Sculpture Gardens are one of the many things that make Minneapolis special. I go there often. Sometimes I go in the evening when it is almost too dark to see anything, and it is still a very wonderful experience. In fact, I prefer to go in the evening…or when it is sprinkling and wet, because you will often have the whole place to yourself. There is just something about feeling small in a large place, with hidden and tucked away places. End your visit with a walk across the lighted, flower path way and take yourself over the walking bridge (not the spoon bridge…hehe)to the Loring for a drink or appetizerPros + good aura, walk from Loring, romantic
