Where is the Best Free Attraction in Austin, Texas?
These botanical gardens were quite a bit bigger than expected! The rose garden, Japanese garden and pre-historic garden are all highlights. Other points of interest is the succulents garden, herb garden, butterfly walk and Austin’s Green Garden which displays several small vignettes of plants that work well in the Austin area. Cool and inviting on a hot summer day, this…
Whether you’re hiking or biking, this is the best trail in town. I have a hybrid bike, so it’s a little too rough for my wheels. And I like to bring my dog, so I hike the trail all the time. I particularly like how sections are separated for hikers. Also the creek bed is almost from another planet, it’s so cool. Bring plenty of water and don’t forget to bring the mutt and let her cool off in the creek afterwards. Not bad for free.
My hotel was at the site of the “bats” so I went down and joined approximately 100 people (young, old, tourists, locals) We waited in a nice park and waited and waited and then out they came. A zillions little bats just kept coming out from under this bridge. I was very weird but cool. I’m glad I saw this because I could never have imagined what 1.5 million bats look like. I also never thought of bats as being “good” for society. We could use some mosquito eating bats in Miami. Wonder if they each roaches and toads…. I would plan it into your schedule. Even just being there doing nothing for 15 minutes before dusk is relaxing. If you have on comfortable clothes you can go for a nice walk or run on the lake (that looks like a river).Pros + unique, unexpected, safeCons – quick, bad time of evening
Unless you are in a UT fraternity or sorority, a lot of the bars with a Sixth Street address are pretty lame (one exception off the top of my head is The Jackalope). Check out the bars along Red River for a more interesting experience. However, on Friday and Saturday nights, the police block Sixth St. to cars, and people can just hang out in the middle of the street. This is a sight to see, so I recommend walking down Sixth St. during these times, for pure entertainment value. Also, whatever you do, DO NOT eat Roppolo’s pizza. This is quite possibly the worst pizza in the United States. This should be fairly obvious upon sight of it, but I too have reluctantly purchased a plastic-y looking slice of cheese at 1:00 am, just because there are almost no places to get food late at night downtown. If you find yourself really needing some food, you are MUCH better off walking to the Onion pizza place at 116 W. 5th (not far the center of Sixth St. mayhem). Or just ask some locals where you
