Where is the Best Fireside Dining in New York, New York?
So here’s the thing: I used to work for Danny Meyer. That being divulged, I can’t help it, but I think that if you are going to spend this much on food, you should be treated to AN EXPERIENCE. I brought my bf here for his birthday, and we received pretty good service, great food and a lovely atmosphere but not the ever elusive “EXPERIENCE experience.” The wine was good too, but my server didn’t help much with the decision making process, and when all was said and done, my wallet was over $200 lighter and I found myself wishing we had gone to Union Square Cafe, where they really know how to go that extra mile to make you feel like royalty. SO. If you are a Park Sloper and don’t feel like commuting for your fancy feasts, go ahead and make a res at Applewood. But if you are incredibly picky and a stickler for service, you still gotta go to Manhattan.Pros + decent food, passable service, pretty roomCons – it ain’t no Gramercy Tavern
A bit sleepy in a sleepy neighborhood, go figure. Was sent by a colleague at work. The girl at the door was really nice. The food was tasty although not excellent–it was 90 degrees and my grill cheese sandwich with lobster was alright but so heavy and rich. I only ate half. The Mrs. had a crab salad that was excellent. Before we shared a ham plate. It came out on this neat cutting board. The hams were good, but the homemade honey-glazed pretzels that came with it were better. The drinks were on-point. Get the Caiparinia (sp?). It’s spicy and refreshing. Oh, and the beefeater is as good here as usual (hehe…) The peach pie was delicious. The coffee tasted old. The server was competent. Everything was expensive but not outrageous. The room is nice but so big, dark and cavernous with literally, hundreds of candles. I’ll go back, but in October or November when it gets cold and that grilled cheese seems more appropriate.
My husband and I went to the Waverly on a Saturday early evening and I BEGGED him to stop in for a drink…WHAT A MISTAKE!! I was sooo excited to get in and sit at the bar. The drinks I have to say were really good..the bartender was ok UNTIL he decided to kick us out of our seats at the bar so a couple of young girls could sit down…not asking just my husband to give up his seat but literally told us to “get up” so these two girls could sit down..we had not been there long, and we were spending GOOD money..I asked for our bill which he threw at me and I have to say even the two girls were shocked and did not want us to give up our seats..the bartender went on to tell them that we were from Chicago and just visiting so we needed to leave..actually, we visit NYC frequently as we were living in CT at the time…I took the bill, paid with my American Black Card and left and will NEVER GO BACK!!!! My boyfriend and I went to The Place on a snowy night (last Monday) and the service was great. We were promptly seated and Greg, or Craig provided excellent service. My Bf ordered the steak and he loved it. I had the salmon which was perfectly seasoned.What I liked the most was the fireplace, the ambiance, the wine…overall it’s a great place to dine with a significant other Pros + Great ambiance
