Where is the Best Fireside Dining in Boston, Massachusetts?
Romance is what this place sells. If your signifigant other rates there food by how many inches there steak hangs off the plate, this may not be your style. This restaurant does have real charm and potential. YES ladies and gentleman there menu by conparison is small. (FYI theres more focus how there food is prepared, not on how there going to cook 28 different entrees and still manage to have your venison cooked perfectly medium rare.) To some there prices are high, but escargo and venison are not something every resturant boston serves up with such style and flavor. If french and a peaceful atmosphire are what your looking for the hungry-I is by all means the place for you. If your idea for the night is some groaning about work and hoping your partner will fall asleep early. Take some advice, save you money and order take out.Pros + Atmosphire, Winelist, FirepalcesCons – Parking
Recently during Restaurant Week I was taken to Upstairs on the Square. Was I ever surprised! Though the service was most efficient, the food was unbelievable, and not in the way one would hope. I ordered one of the Restaurant Week dinners, clearly assembled with the mildly reduced price in mind. The nearly tasteless cod was covered in an overwhelming olive tapenade. Whoever paired these two items must have lost their taste buds in an unfortunate tasting accident. What topped it off was the nerve to serve an invitingly described chocolate dessert which turned out to be two minuscule hockey pucks. These items did not warrant washing a dish. The next time I’m invited to this restaurant, I’ll do my best to lobby for another choice, or simply beg off. I would not consider returning of my own accord.
It’s funny. I was reading all the review before taking my boyfriend here for his birthday. I’ve been to A&L’s before, but it was years ago and I didn’t quite remember what it was like. I was a bit nervous because I really wanted him to have an excellent meal on his birthday. The person who answered the phone was a bit rude so I was VERY nervous that the waiters might be the same way. Not true at all. (We went on a Thursday night) First of all, it is LOUD in there. Most of its customers are Professionals. I had to speak loudly and my boyfriend was less than 3 feet away from me. Second, yes, the hostesses wear clothing that is… scandalous. Low LOW LOW cut shirts and Short Short skirts…. haha. Third, they did basically clear our table/fill our drinks QUICKLY. This can be a pro or con for people. Our glasses of water were never even half empty! It was a little bit annoying that the waitstaff was coming over every 5minutes to literally throw water into our glasses while I was trying
The SceneWhile Christopher’s exposed brick walls and crackling fireplace provide a most welcoming environment, it’s the restaurant’s lengthy menu of inexpensive comfort food that makes regulars out of area students and young professionals. When not glued to the bar’s numerous TVs, libation lovers select from one of Cambridge’s most impressive drink menus (try the sinful chocolate cake martini). Friendly servers are well-versed when it comes to describing each of the 20-plus beers on tap.The FoodThe kitchen shows great dexterity in churning out any number of cuisine types–cheesy enchiladas share table space with plates of piquant Thai curry stir-fry and homemade butternut squash ravioli. Health-conscious diners are especially well taken care of, considering that burgers are made with 100% naturally raised beef and ever-popular buffalo wings come from free-range chickens. Adventurous types looking for more than a sandwich wisely gravitate towards the grilled salmon filet with sweet-and-
The food is not at the quality (preparation and presentation) suggested by the price. Really not even close. Thew service is also below par on occasion. I go there because I live around the corner and will continue to go for that reason. Brunch is a better value and is generally worth it. There is usually no waiting for a table for brunch (rare indeed). The atmosphere is nice but this place is a pretender.Pros + atmosphereCons – value
