Where is the Best Dive Bar in Austin, Texas?
This is a great little beer only bar! My husband and I walk there after work for a few beers and always stay longer than anticipated. The ladies working the bar (Ginny and Cheryl) are on top of taking care of the customers. Always a fun little band in the corner and on weekends they host texas popular artists like Dale Watson. Great crowd young or old. Pros + location, service, music.Cons – crowd in Sundays. can’t think of any others.
This is certainly a dive bar and if your expecations are set accordingly, you won’t be disappointed. It’s got a 70’s decor with wood paneling, gold marbled glass tiles on the wall, and some beat up furniture probably from that decade as well. It’s kinda refreshing to see that in our fast and furious world, somethings stay the same. The people inside are unassuming and not pretentious. T-shirts and jeans crowd. The staff is very friendly with lots of “hun”s and “shoog”s thown at you. They have a great jukebox that plays oldies you can sing and dance along with. There was plenty of room to sit and a small dance floor by the jukebox. The year round Christmas decorations are unique and I especially liked the “dancing elves” that hang over the bar and drop down when someone goes to the men’s room. As they say, it”s always Christmas at Lala’s!There are signs that say NO SMOKING, but people still do. One look up at the ceiling tiles and you can see what 20 years of cigarettes probably do to
Somebody said, “Bring back Liberty Lunch!” Somebody else said, “Bring back Bates Motel!” Still a third person shouted, “I’m gay! And it’s okay!” Well, somebody listened, to the first two, and that somebody, well, that somebody was actually two people: Randall and Donya. And they have total punk-rock credibility for transforming and empty cinder-block space into the best small club to see hard rock in Austin. They’ve embued the place with their own legacies, and it shows.Pros + almost everythingCons – tricky acoustics
I’ve been going to the Texas Showdown for many years now. Long enough to join the prestigious Stein Club (basically my own mug to call my own which will always be there waiting for me.) This bar is well known for three things:1. Great atmosphere2. Great regulars3. Great bartendersNever will you walk into any other bar and be welcomed the first time like you have been going there for years. The people are friendly and the beer is plentiful! So come on down and pick up a conversation, throw some darts, shoot some pool or grab any of the great bar games and have a blast.Pros + Great atmosphere and people. A fun place to relax and mingle.Cons – No liquor. Can get crowded on the weekends. Parking.
If I could give this bar zero stars I would! I am sure Jimmy the owner gets a sick pleasure out of reading these with his loser regulars so I will give them some more material. All of the things about getting ripped off are a cake walk compared to this guy ticked off. There is a serious mental disorder with this guy and it is scary. I was unaware that people that were as unstable as him were allowed to carry licenses to serve beer! He probably was denied for a real liquor license because he could not pass the “I’m not a raging lunatic test”. All-in-all, I feel really bad for this guy. Even when you read the nice comments on City Search from his “friends” these people do not like him. They are posing as friends because being on this guys bad side is a scary place. It is sheer pity for this lost soul who will one day realize he has made a life of being mean, hurting people unjustly, and just plain poor ethics. I think if I came to the end of my life and realized that I had beha
