While I don’t think the food is as memorable as it was when I first dined there in the early 90’s, when you add location and ambience, Louie’s Backyard is still on my list of can’t miss dining spots in Key West. 2007 broke a string of 10 consecutive years visiting Key West so I can not address the reviews written that year; I can only say we never had a bad or poorly prepared meal nor were we ever treated badly or ignored by the staff. We’ll be back in July and dinner at Louie’s is top of the list. Pros + Great Location, Right On the Water, Ambience, Service
A very good local restaurant featuring an attractive menu with an old time Florida Keys decor. However, new ownership has allowed the operation to slip a bit. The menu remains varied, attractive and creative with many fresh local seafood selections and a nightly special or two but for no apparent reason the service at times can be slow to non-existant. Should that be the case on your visit, rather than wait until you’re upset, seek out the manager and ask for a server. Food quality remains quite good but not quite up to previous standards. Still, Mama’s is worth a visit. The sunday Eggs Benedict, Crab cake Benedict or Filet mignon Benedict are excellent. Dining inside is pleasant in the tropically painted atmosphere and the patio is quite nice most evenings but during mosquito or no-see-um season the patio can be uncomfortable and you may spend more time swating and scratching than enjoying your meal. The tiny bar off the patio is a favorite local hangout and serves a complete
We love Alice’s and Alice the chef. She and her staff are the best. You walk in and feel so welcome. Bright colors and local art work is everywhere. The food is creative, staff knowledgeable, the cocktails great — especially the martinis and the wine list, filled with hand picks from Alice. Do not miss at least one of your meals at Alices. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner; I would try one of each. Also, do not miss dessert.
