Where is the Best Comfort Food in Dallas, Texas?
If you like chicken and chicken-fried-steak and the usual suspect side dishes – You will like Babes. I know a lot of folks who RAVE over the place… And if you are into waiting almost an hour for a table (no matter what day of the week); sitting in a crowded ‘eatery (you get bumped at least 20 times while trying to enjoy your dinner)’; being served in an impersonal, “Speed Racer” sort of fashion (we only got the attention of our waitress ‘on the fly’)… then you will love Babes. The food is good, homestyle fare, there is no debating that fact. But for me, the food wasn’t enough to give it a passionate thumbs-up. And the warmer the weather, the longer, more crowded, more inattentive it gets because of tourists and out-of-town family coming in for visits. Go there if you never have been. It is an experience. Otherwise, go with KFC and a nice, quiet family dinner in the comfort and calm of your own home.
I love the burgers here. I decided to try them after they made the Top 50 list in the Texas Monthly magazine. My husband and I are determined to try all 50 burgers and so far, this has been our favorite. The only negative is the inconsistency in food quality and mediocre service. I live in Houston but will travel to Dallas on the weekend just to get a burger from this place. Sometimes when I come, the lettuce and tomatoes are soggy and the fries are cold; while others the food is perfect. You can tell that the staff doesn’t like complaints so I often will just keep the food even when it is of poor quality. After driving all the way to Dallas to eat here, I would really appreciate hot and fresh food because it cost me a heck of a lot more to eat this burger than what the staff is aware of. I am sure many people are going through extra lengths to patronize this establishment due to the Texas Monthly article. If they would focus more on consistent food quality and friendlier ser
When looking for a tasty cold treat on a typical Texas summer day or night, I usually find myself at a Cold Stone Creamery or Marble Slab. That was untill my frind took me up to Sheridan’s Frozen Custard in Frisco. I was skeptical about there only being two flavors (chocolate and vanilla), but when presented with a huge array of sweet flavors and toppings that are mixed in, I was sold! The Staff seemed very informed about the custard making process and explained that frozen custard is made slightly warmer than icecream, thus making the flavor stand out better and easing the cold pains on my teeth. Sheridan’s was really busy when I went up there on a Saturday night, but I was impressed with promptness of the staff with getting my treat out to me.The decor was a nice touch, harkening back to the 1950’s soda/icecream shop style which give a sense of cleanliness with all the white panels and uniforms. There’s no outdoor seating however, which is probably for the best with the amount of
I grew up eating Southern cuisine in Mississippi, and I have enjoyed Ms. Mary’s on several visits, usually during the lunch hour. Unfortunately, as of this writing (08/31/07) things seem to have changed. The service is nothing special now — pretty much like what you’ll find in a lot of places with waitstaff on automatic pilot. The meatloaf was a little dry and somewhat tasteless with some kind of tomato concoction slopped on it. The vegetables (green beans and yellow squash) tasted as though little effort or real seasoning had been added, and the corn bread tasted almost sour. The peach cobbler was a good as ever, though. Even the decor has changed somewhat with an overemphasis on cheap-looking art depicting stereotypical, or at the very least, done-to-death images of Africans or African Americam jazz musicians. All traces of the family history that had previously been depicted or hinted at seemed to be gone. In a nutshell, today’s meal did not taste like good Southern cooking, the di
Last night, July 18th, 2007, my family of 6 went to this cafe. I had heard great things about the place and the food. When we went into the cafe, it was a little early and only two other tables had folks at them. The waitress sort of pushed us to give her the drinks orders up front. A little pushy, but that’s life. Menu looked great. I was just getting over a lower track sickness and only wanted meat and a starch. The Salmon sounded good, but it came with green beans. At the same price the shrimp came with a wild-rice side. I ask the lady waiting on us if I could subsitute the beans for the rice side. She went to ask the cook and he said he would not do that. The menu did not say “no substitutions”. Since the price for both dishes was $12.99, and the cook would fix the rice if I ordered the shrimp, I could not understand the cooks reason for not fixing the rice instead. He just did’nt want to. I then ordered the Pork Chop that came with mashed potatoes and it was just O.K. (over c
