Where is the Best Comfort Food in Austin, Texas?
Hoover’s is a southern comfort experience hard to find in Austin these days. Perhaps a little heavy on the heat (spice), but that’s part of the tradition. Collard greens made like my granny made, jalepeno spinach casserole that can both inspire and catch you on fire and some good cajun cuisine that needs to keep on growin in Austin. I was however, a little dissapointed with the boudin special. A little too dry guys. Now, I’m gonna defend these Hoover’s a little and perhaps educate some previous comments made concerning a split charge. This is real estate and people gotta pays the bills and make a living. Your tip and those extra charges are there to make sure everyone is taken care of and all the bills are paid. Sitting down for two hours in a restaurant and ordering only a cup of coffee (strictly hypethetical) means people are loosing money. Hoover’s is doing what every restaurant on the planet is trying to do…survive. Next time just share something. Don’t ask them to split it. The
We always like the LOCAL recommendations for eating……….interestingly enough, it was not our hotel Valet, but he was a young man living in Austin, his whole life. We followed his suggestion, and were not disappointed!! Pecan crusted catfish to die for!!! Deep fried asparagus…..only in Texas!!! It was very good, but back to our Med diet!!! A Brownie, chocolate sauce,…
We went to this Austin institution based on recommendations from the locals. We went at 11:45 am on Firday. We beat the crowd! The Hippie Chick was deserving of all the positive comments. The veggies were wonderful and fresh and the addition of the thai chicken breast made it filling. We were very impressed with the salad dressings. I had the jalapeno lime dressing which had a kick. The pesto ranch was garlicky with the right texture. The jalapeno corn chowder was the soup of the day. Spicy and delicious. My mom ordered the fresh turkey sandwich. It was impressive. It was not the “rolled turkey” pressed meat that most restaurants serve. This was “pulled turkey” that was fresh roasted. We ordered some frings for our sons. The fries were so-so but the onion rings were battered perfectly and you could taste the onions. Just about the best rings I’ve had in Austin. The boys who ordered burgers were not really impressed with them. They went with a plain cheeseburger. I tri
It had been a while since I had eaten at Artz, but I have been twice in the last month or so and the ribs were wonderful. Tender, moist & very tasty. On my second recent visit, I had to order a full raack, so I had guaranteed leftovers to take home. Unlike some other reviewers, I like the BBQ sauce a lot. Even tho’ the ribs taste fine without sauce, I gotta have it. It has kind of ruined me for other barbecue joints. It’s a tangy tomato/vinegar style sauce and to say it is a mix of ketchup and mustard is just dumb. The sides, beans, coleslaw, & tater salad were all very good. The potato salad is a different than I remember, but tastier.(I used to think it was bland.) I have always liked the coleslaw, which is NOT swimming in dressing as too many slaws are.I do go along with the “Insider Tip”…go when the music is playing. The musicians I’ve seen there are usually pretty damn good.
