Where is the Best College Scene in Austin, Texas?
If you want Mexican for cheap and fast, go to Changos! The service is good (staff if friendly) and the food is great for what you pay. The fish tacos are fantastic as is the pork tacos – with pineapple. They make their tortillas fresh (while you watch) and they use fresh cilantro! Also, the agua frescas are so yummy in the summertime – you have to try the horchata (rice with cinammon) – sounds weird but is so tasty. We generally have a good dining experience at Madam Mam’s. A lot of times the food is awesome, but sometimes it’s only okay. That’s why I’m giving the 3 stars, because I think the food is worth a visit. However I’m writing this review because as far as I’m concerned a bad waitress has now stolen money from me, and I feel that deserves public comment.The last time we went we had the worst wait staff ever. (Westgate location) I tried to flag down our waitress 3 times. We wanted to order dessert, but we were also out of beverages and with spicy food that’s a no-no. I finally tried chasing her down only to have her disappear into the kitchen and not come out until someone else went to fetch her for me.We were so irritated with the lack of service that we did not tip. We wrote 0 on the receipt and the total amount equal to the amount of the bill for the two of us. I was just balancing my check book and I see that she gave herself a $2 tip anyway.We will be going in to complain, and I’
I find myself at Trudy’s at least twice a week. Sometimes I crawl in there in the morning for a quick plate of much-needed breakfast tacos. Sometimes I stroll up in the afternoon after work for happy hour. Either way, I rarely leave disappointed. The food is pretty standard Tex-Mex, the kitchen is cool about vegetarian/vegan options and both their red and green complimentary salsas are excellent. Drink prices are great and, if you can make it there before 5pm, you should have no trouble snagging a table on the patio. I’ve had one really bad service experience but I chalked that up to one particular server paying too much attention to a table of off-the-clock employees and not enough attention to our table. Trudy’s is not changing the way we think about food, but it is keeping us full and filling up our glass whenever we ask.
I was in town for the Austin City Limits Festival. We were wandering downtown, and saw Fado’s and decided to give it a shot. It was ok, but I don’t think I would recommend it. I tried to order 3 different Irish beers, and each one got a blank starte from the waiter. We had to ask a few time for our water, and our water felt the need to tell us about how he was supposed to be at the ACL Festival, but had to work. The food was pretty good. Our napkins were damp from not being fully dried, and, while we were wating for our tab, we looked arounf and noticed how dirty the place was. But, the layout of the bar was cool, and it seemed like if there was a bit more effort put into the palce, it could be a rockin place to hang out, day or night.Pros + good locationCons – staff seems to not really care
