Where is the Best Chinese Food in Portland, Oregon?
I thought this place was pretty good overall. My main complaint was the service. No one greeted us when we entered, we finally just grabbed our own menus and sat down. Our server then immediately brought us some tea and water. We ordered steamed potstickers, which were pretty tasty. We then ordered the orange “chicken” and eggplant in brown sauce. It seemed to take forever for our order to come. Our server just sat at another table and did what appeared to be homework. It was us and another couple at a table and that was it. It was extremely slow, but atleast the food finally came. We were both shocked to see the amount of orange “chicken”. I mean, yes, it was tasty, but it was a TINY portion for $8 bucks. Good thing the eggplant was also tasty and a decent portion size. I would come here again, but don’t think the orange “chicken” is worth the price.Pros + yummy veggie foodCons – small portions, a little overpriced
This is a fairly large, no-nonsense Chinese spot perfect for lunch, but suitable for dinner as well. It’s located in a business park and there’s always ample parking (covered, even!) The restaurant is clean, and while it won’t win any hipness awards, it looks … reliable. Lunch specials are dirt-cheap ($6.50 for soup, entree with rice, noodles, and crab rangoon) and while the lunch menu is fairly short, it has all the American Chinese favorites. Your table will be set up, complete with water, soup, and a server in a matter of seconds; your order can be customized any way you like, and the plates will make it out to your table just as you’re finishing your soup. Their staff is almost psychic – always right there when you need them, very fast and helpful, and you don’t have to wait for… anything, really. The food is good, the ambience ok, but the service is fantstic.Pros + Excellent service, lots of tables, great parkingCons – Predictable menu, if that bothers you
As a former employee of Sungari Pearl, I have seen what goes on not only in the front of the restaurant, but the kitchen too. The entire staff (especially the kitchen) takes great pride in making sure every customer enjoys the freshest and best tasting food possible. Of course, as with any small restaurant that deals with the volume of in-house and take-out customers that Sungari Pearl does, sometimes service may not be as efficient on a Saturday night as it is on a Tuesday, but the staff does their best to ensure quality service. As for the cleanliness of the kitchen, I’ve worked in quite a few restaurants, and Sungari Pearl has the cleanest one I’ve had the pleasure of working in. I have eaten the food countless times and even though I no longer work there, I’ll continue to do so. Sungari Pearl has by far the best chinese food in Portland, not only in my opinion, but also in the opinions of Willamette Weekly readers, as it was voted #1 chinese restaurant in Portland this year.
Our party of nine elected the recommended large party option at $12.95/person this evening. I thought this was quite a good deal and we definitely got our money’s worth in quantity (we took home about half of every dish). We got hot tea to drink and our water glasses were conscientiously refilled. For starters we had a large bowl of egg drop soup, a large bowl of hot and sour soup, and a large plate with vegetarian spring rolls, pot-stickers, and shrimp puffs. For our entrees we received a large bowl of rice, and large plates of sweet and sour pork, orange chicken, chow mein, green beans, shrimp, beef with vegetables (I don’t have the menu in front of me so I’m a little vague on the exact names). All of the food was classic americanized, oversauced Chinese. If you like this style, you’ll love this place. The service was a little spotty but not terrible. However, if you’ve ever had authentic Chinese food, this place will not make you happy. Lots of oil, lots of sauce. The shrimp dish wa
