I’ve lived in the area for 10 years and have frequented Yoshis. It’s a well known fact that you will have to share your table or booth, even if you put your name on a seat previous to the show. (People that haven’t been there yet, please be forwarned, you have no choice but to share it,) Food and service will never be the reason to go to Yoshis in Oakland, however… the calibre of performers is always outstanding, and they give some locals and lesser known people perform there as well. They mix up the genre at times which has proven to be a good thing since there are a lot of evenings earlier in the week where they can still have a full house for the first show and you can turn on to some upcoming artists. I went to Yoshis in the city for the first time to hear Count Basie Orchestra with Ledisi — what a great show, AND I got to reserve seats! I’m going back again, and again, and again… Yoshis is 5* for music and great value!

Hotel Biron is a really, really great ‘off the beaten’ path wine bar/art gallery. A unique spot where you can sit at the bar, unwind and chat with the folks huddling around the bar, or cozy up with your friends in a couch nook. It is super intimate, friendly, and is a great alternative to over-crowded bars. The fact that they don’t advertise has really helped keep the vibe, local and intimate, and the owners are young, friendly entrepreneurs that are usually manning the bar themselves. A perfect ending to a long week!Pros + Easy Parking, Great Atmosphere, Very Intimate

I went here on a Wednesday evening for a little pre-party drink. It was a cool little space with some interesting art on the walls. My drink was good and strong, but my favorite part of the experience was the list of silly factoids on the bathroom wall. Overall, I say thumbs up — but I can’t vouch for what the crowd is like on a busy weekend.Pros + Convenient downtown location, Cool art

Tiny little space but very swanky. I like the chill after-work crowd and they have a nice happy hour spread, as well as little chocolate treats. Drinks aren’t cheap, but not totally overpriced either. I’ll like this place until it gets well known and crowded.

I work in the bar industry, and heard the drinks are good and cheap in this bar. Sat at the bar and noticed an older man, who I later learned was the owner, talking to one of the bartenders. He seemed extemely condescending, at one point telling the girl that she had gained weight and not only was the girl ignoring his comments but it seemed like it was normal. Though I felt bad putting money in his pocket, the staff handled the bar welll and the crowd was good looking and fun. Pros + good priced drinks, nice staff, great musicCons – confusing scene, should have a fire
