Where is the Best Breakfast in Austin, Texas?
When I get home late from work, I usually take the 21/22 bus. On the horizon as I walk to my up-and-coming trendy college “hood,” I see El Chilito. It isn’t normal that I get a warm fuzzy feeling for a small shack with funny lights, but for some reason it happens with El Chilito.I walk up and either get the carne guisada tacos, which I usually have to repeat a couple times because I have a spanish accent. They are fabulous. I even tried the white rice and black beans, and it just completes me. The good thing is that sometimes when I long for breakfast food from home, I can get a chorizo & egg plate even after work.El Chilito has a special place in my heart..not only because there are actual Mexicans cooking, but I can watch them cook, and feel pride that my people have a job in this crazy city.So, in the end, I recommend this place for the quick fix, really laid-back night, or just really lazy night.Oh, and get the lemonade, they try to be cute and call it “leh-moh-nada.” Oh you gu
I don’t quite understand all the scathing reviews of this place because of service. The quality of service I received was fine. Not legendary, but not terrible as other reviews seem to have experienced.I had tofu fries appetizer (fried bean curd in the shape of french fries). Probably good with a peanut sauce, but nothing more than a novel way to eat some tofu. The entree was Feta Chicken, a beautifully plated grilled chicken breast (though overcooked) with feta, a pita and tabooleh and hummus. All of it was good. I also was obliged to at least try a pumpkin pancake on the order of two friends. I was surprised at how good a pancake could taste, dynamite stuff.Pros + Good value for well presented foodCons – A little more attention could be paid to overall food quality
There are lots of interesting, delicious sounding items on the Bakehouse’s menu. I loved the decor.However, the overall effect of the food was bland and lacking. My wife’s bratwurst was great, but all of the side dishes, including the warm potato salad (which was described as “heaven” by our server) were acceptable, not memorable.I had a chicken florentine, stuffed with spinach and cheese. Very little flavor.I’ve had truly bad meals, and this was not one of them. There were many good sounding items on the menu. I wouldn’t drive far to give it a second chance.Pros + decor was great, brats were tastyCons – flavor of everything else.
This place is just fantastic. Feels and tastes like a mom and pop place. Very clean eating area and bathrooms. The mexican food is very good here. The breakfast tacos are big and very very tasty! The burgers are great as are the fries. The sandwiches are made from BOARSHEAD meats and cheeses, very good stuff. It’s a premium sandwich at a bargain price. Be sure to ask about the daily lunch specials as they change from day to day. I just wish they were open evenings so I could grab something on the way home at 5:30 pm. They close around 3:30 pm weekdays if I remember correctly. If possible try to phone in your order ahead of time, it makes getting in and out much faster. If they don’t pickup the phone during business hours you can safely assume they are packed at the moment. They don’t pay someone to cover the phone full time, but the quality and quantity of food for the dollar MORE than makes up for it!
