Where is the Best Beer Selection in Austin, Texas?
I love, love, love this bar. While walking down 6th street my boyfriend and I stumbles upon Maggie Mae’s and it was very enjoyable. The waitstaff is excellent – very friendly. It also has the quality of being three bars in one. In a quiet upstairs nook we played pool, then checked out the Beatles cover band playing in the side room, and finally strolled upstairs to the roof to sit and drink. Plus we got in early enough to not have a cover charge – definate plus. If you stumble across Maggie Mae’s like me definetly go in, you will not be sorry.Pros + Friendly Wait Staff
I really enjoy the Flying Saucer and go about once a week or so (about 35 beers into the 200 beer club where you get your name and quote on the wall). The beer selection is good, very much geared to the Texas tastes (lighter beers) but a decent selection of darker beers. Well they could use some help on the ambers and cask conditions choices but hey this isn’t Oregon.Wait staff ranges from friendly and knowledgeable, uptight and impressed with themselves, to downright knuckleheads who have no idea what kind of beer they are selling. What do you expect when the skirts are about 2 inches longer than H**ter’s… Needless to say we still manage to have a good time and enjoy the beer.Food is good, not great. I enjoy the salads, the burger and a couple of the sandwiches. Skip the tots, not enough for the price. Come pretty quickly even on busy nights. I have to say I have only once experienced a long wait for beers and the check – but there seems to be a high turnover of staff but
I had actually never heard of/noticed this place before, despite the fact that I’ve driven and walked by it numerous times. The outside is pretty nondescript, and it’s much nicer inside than you would guess at first glance.2 friends and I came here today for Saturday brunch at 12:45. I made a reservation just to be sure, but it was totally unnecessary. One of the worst things about trying to eat a good meal on the weekend in Austin is WAITING. And at Zax’s, I doubt that is ever much of an issue. And I like it that way. There are tons of beers on tap (10+) and there were lots of good selections to peak my interest. The prices are very reasonable (~$7-$13 entrees) and most beers are $4.25/pint (which came FULL). I had an omelette with goat cheese and spinach for $8 which I thought was quite good. It was packed to the brim with spinach and served with a side and toast. One of my friends ordered the egg/crab cake/hollandaise sauce concoction and we all agreed it was divine. It’s always nic
