Where is the Best Bar Menu in Minneapolis, Minnesota?
Stopped in here just for drinks before meeting friends at a different place. We sat at the bar. The bartender did make some great drinks but the service was slow. Apparently they had a DJ coming in too, because he was setting up while we were drinking. The place still has it’s ambience and some of the trendy crowd still seems to be there, but it’s lost some of it’s lustre. I don’t know that this can be attributed just to Fhima’s though. For a while there St. Paul was the scene when all the places clustered around Lawson were new. They drew some of the Minneapolis crowd away and some of the 9 to 5’ers stuck around to check out the new places, but I think on the whole for the trendy scene St. Paul is played out. Four of us went for a Christmas season dinner to enjoy some conversation and good seafood. This was our third visit to M & S, and we were quite happy with almost everything. The best thing on the table was the beet salad – a phenomenal salad, closely followed by a awesome bowl of clam chowder, and the scallop/risotto appetizer. Entrees we shared were the 1 1/4 # lobster – cooked just right, and the lobster/filet combo plate – both were just right, the filet melted in yor mouth. The stuffed salmon selection was simply wonderful. The least satisfying entre was the proscuitto-wrapped scallop dish. The sauce was nice and spicy as advertized, but the prosciutto and sauce were too salty and overpowered the flavor of the scallops – bummer. Our waiter was great, he recommended a nice bottle of wine, and the desserts were good but not exceptional. I’ve always had breaded walleye so I tried their grilled and I loved it. For walleye veterans maybe Tavern on Grand is no big deal, however for those of us who get to have it only once or twice a year, you need to visit Tavern on Grand! Parking is not easy during prime time, however you can find a spot by circling the block or parking on a side street. We waited at the bar and good selection of brews on tap. Nice old tavern setting. Watched the Wolves game while waiting. Once we sat down we ordered and were served promptly and courteously.Bread is soft and tasty. Good veggie side dish ofbroccoli-carrot combo. Baked potato good. The place is decent enough, but not fantastic. We stopped in for a couple of Irish coffees and some appetizers. The appetizers were so-so (fish tocos were good, but ribs were recycled), but the Irish coffees were the worst. It seemed a bit strange that the bartender had to “disappear” to make them – usually they build a drink in front of you so you can see what’s what. Not this time. He takes off to some cubby hole away from the bar and then returns: “Ta dah” – here they are: luke warm and – I swear – no whiskey. So we asked him about it in a nice way and in a nice way he gets us two more on the house. A nice gesture, but two times bad is not good, it’s just double bad. At first we thought maybe their mistaken opinion of Irish coffee might be using Baleys instead of Irish whiskey, but the drinks were too weak even for that.
