Where is the Best Bakery in San Francisco, California?
ok 4 stars for the pastries and cakes. 5 for the french toast. 2 for the frittata: tasteless and loaded of potatoes, 2 for the soggy baguete ready to go, 4 for the homemade bread. Unfortunatley I have to rate the service only with 1 star. Only the middle aged lady (Linda?) and another super nice guy are always smily. The rest of the stuff is always misarable, they hardley greet you and almost never reply with a welcome to you thank you. What is wrong with the staff here?!!!! also, please change the shaky tables, most of my coffee gets spelt all over . I would give a 4 starts to this place but the bad service and the lousy table plus dirtiness around make it down to threePros + pastry, cakes, french toast and latteCons – service, shaky tables and dirty tables
i dont head down to Portero too often, but wanted to grab a quick bite to eat while i was in that part of the city, and came across this cafe. walking into this large space, which according to one of the owners was a diesel shop, makes me just wanna take a long siesta. the walls have some really good art hanging by local painters. world-music playing in the background, and plenty of seating for everyone, including a decent size patio in the back. the place was crowded even at 2pm, but everyone has enough room to just kick back and chill. i had some juice and a chkn pesto sandwich, which was pretty good. the service is friendly and fast.Pros + decor, service, priceCons – different neighborhoo, parking
When I moved to SF in the 1980s, I found Stella Pastry and fell in love with the sacripantina. In 1999 I moved to the East Coast, in 2006 I just returned to the city by the bay. The next generation may have taken over, but the quality and recipes are unchanged. Stella Pastry is a jewel in North Beach, not to be missed. The cookies are wonderful, lovely coffee and the sacripantina, well it is what they are known for. It’s beyond description, except it is absolutely to die for. I hate giving away secret places in San Francisco, but Stella Pastry is a place too good to keep secret.Pros + Everything is absolutely deliciousCons – When tempted, I can eat to much of a good thing!
I was walking around Richmond District a couple of weeks back snapping pictures. I was strolling along Clement Street and bumped into Schubert’s Bakery. Before I was writing reviews on jatbar, I used to come here for the Tiramisu (image 5). I had remembered the bakery items being of high quality and seeing it wasn’t on jatbar, I thought I’d review one of my favorite bakeries. Let’s start with parking situation, it’s not the greatest but still better than other districts in San Francisco. Just keep driving around the block and a spot usually opens up. The signs say this bakery has been in business since 1911 which makes this bakery one of the oldest on jatbar. After reading their history profile online, looks like they’ve gone through 4 generations of owners and been on Clement Street since the 1940’s. They continue to carry original favorites like Neopolitan and Pineapple delight. There wasn’t too many people eating inside the the foot traffic was steady. With plenty of pretty girl
My review is of the pastries…haven’t tried the breads or quiches yet. My favorite: Almond Croissant is heavenly. Chocolate croissant is good. Canelles are ok. Baba au Rhum is so-so.Good tarts. Overwhelming presentation in nice small shop. The bad part? The madeleines are APPALLINGLY BAD, for a ‘french’ bakery. They are bland, dry, and cakey. Not the way they should be. Starbucks and NM (when they used to have a bakery) are much better. For something as simple as madeleines, they were pathetic coming from the place. Sure they have the domes and look yummy, but don’t be fooled. Pricey, but ok on occasion. The other bad thing…the service. Unfriendly, no smiles…the lady behind the counter acted as if I should be grateful to be there, and she was somewhat impatient and made me feel hurried and stupid when I couldn’t pronounce something in french.Pros + lots of choicesCons – lots of choices, haughty service
