Unfortunately, staying anywhere outside of downtown (where the financial district is) is going to be a huge pain for as far as commuting to work. The Standard Hotel Downtown is very hip and close to where you’re working. They are known for their trendy rooftop bar. There are also some very nice restaurants, museums and opera houses in downtown, but not much of a nightlife. BUT, if you stay in downtown, you have access to the subway which can take you to nightlife spots. I’d say either Hollywood (Sunset Blvd near Crescent Heights Blvd has the largest strip of clubs or Hollywood Blvd. and Highland for shopping and restaurants) or Old Town Pasadena (Colorado Blvd and Fair Oaks Blvd), or Universal City (home of Universal Studios and Citywalk) for night life. You should get online and look up where the stops are to get to those areas from the hotel you decide on.
