Where is the Best American Food in Portland, Oregon?
My wife and I learned about the Roots from Portland Monthly Magazine. As a regular customer at Higgins, we were interested in how ?Higgins? foods transformed in to a new generation of restaurant. The first impression when you are trying to find a restaurant is not so impressive especially you see ?UPS Store? and other suburban shops sharing same parking lots. However, as you step into the restaurant, you will be surprised by a nicely decorated interior and friendly waiters. If you are regular to Higgins, you will quickly notice that waiter?s dress code, dishes, and menu are very similar to Higgins. I ordered steam mussels, salad with anchovies ($1 extra), and duck. My wife ordered a salada and a salmon dish. We asked both dishes to be cooked as rare as possible. We both agreed that mussels were very good but Higgins version has much more depth and complexity of flavor. My dad took me to Hubers the first time over 50 years ago when I was just 10 years old. I remember thinking that it was a special place even then. A few years later I worked downtown and would go there for lunch a couple of times a month and always loved it. Somehow it kind of slipped off the radar in the last several years and even though we eat out a lot we never thought about Hubers. Last night we were in the area so I took my wife there for dinner and discovered that they still know how to serve great food at a great price. The service was spot on and the place has a certain comforting charm to it. (except for the chairs I think those are left over from 50 years ago) you would think they could invest in something more comfortable. I had the ham dinner and it puts Honeybaked to shame, moist, tender and full of flavor and a nice size portion. My wife had the turkey and loved it. Mothers is what I would describe as one of the perfect dining experiences in Portland, if you go on the weekends order the eggs benny I like to add avocado to mine, which has never been a problem. You want it you get it. If you go for lunch the chopped liver is to die for, ” if you like chop liver”, if not the best thing about Mothers is there is something for everyone, from burgers to salads to eggs and bacon.
