Where is the Best After-Work Bar in Salt Lake City, Utah?
It is a private club (Utah oddity), so you have to buy a membership to get in. Not much though. Entrées are priced quite high, but the appetizers and seafood platters are fairly reasonable. The shrimp platter is excellent with many big, juicy, top-quality shrimp. They also have a very good selection of fresh oysters and fish as well. This is pretty much the only place to get consistently good oysters in Salt Lake. They make their soups to order, and while they are nothing stellar, they are pretty good. Their “New Yorker Kick Ass Chili” is worth a try.It is very busy, and quite noisy most evenings. You will have a very hard time getting a table on the weekend. Also the table and booth layout is pretty stupid, and you end up having about 1/3 the table space you really need. Being a private club you can smoke. Great if you’re a smoker I guess, but if you are a non-smoker, prepare yourself for copious amounts of smoke.
We’ve been members for over 18 years, but will not patronize any of the Gastronomy restaurants until some major changes happen. They’ve gone coporate in a huge way. While the Oyster Bar was never a bargain basement eatery, the portions were fair, preparation was wonderful if straightforward, and service was superb. We recently dined there and I ordered the line-caught Atlantic salmon filet. What arrived bore no resemblance to a filet. It was a skinny tail piece that was curled up it was so overdone. When the waiter finally returned to query, ” How’s everything tasting?” I pointed out that the fish on my plate was overcooked and not a filet. “Right! I kinda wondered about that when I brought it out!” H-m-m-m! I THOUGHT the server’s job was to see that the item ordered was the item served. Anyhoo, he quickly brought another piece of salmon. This is the best bar for anyone visiting any day of the week. It is especially popular during conventions. The bar is right in the downtown area and is really big. It is generally considered a sports bar. The basement is the main sports bar area with a lot of TV’s, pool tables, air hockey, arcade games, etc. The main floor is mostly a dining area with a small dance floor. Upstairs there is a huge two-level dance floor that is only open on Fridays and Saturdays. Friday nights feature Top 40 dancing and on Saturday nights there are live bands. They are open during the day for lunch and open early for dinner. The food is actually really good (for a bar, I recommend the nachos). I smoke, and since this is a private club, you can smoke in it. They will ask for a membership at the door. Just ask for a temporary membership, which is around $5 and is good for 2 weeks.
I like fun dive bars. I dont know why, but I just do. Murphy’s is just that a fun Dive bar that has decent drinks for pretty cheap. I like it because my girlfreinds are meetin’ up after work sometimes to get some drinks do our girly talkin’. I used to consider a good place to met poeple but lately I have been leanin’ elsewhere. Another thing I like is their location. It is so close to Cheers to you and the Deset Lounge that we have memberships to all three and we go bar hoppin’. Way fun. Pros + Good Drinks for a good deal and fun times on Main Street. Cons – Kind of divey but chraming.
