Where is the Best After-Work Bar in Hartford, Connecticut?
The pork ribs were really quite excellent; the meat was falling off the bone. I got the half portion of the ribs, and it was definitely enough. The coleslaw was fantastic – if you like a good simpe coleslaw with not a lot of mayonnaise to junk it up. As for the New Orleans/Cajun aspect…. Not so authentic, but decent I suppose for a New England attempt at Cajun cooking. Being raised for the last 19 years in New Orleans and an absolute lover of (good) food, I am able to speak from a pretty informed perspective. The “red beans and rice” were pretty dry, but the andouille sausage was pretty authentic. The “jambalaya” was actually more just like rice and a little bland for true jambalaya, but my friend (a thoroughly New England palate) enjoyed it. That’s actually all I can speak from. I have no idea why Max’s Oyster Bar would be well thought of, by anyone who knows how to cook mac’n’cheese and shake a good cocktail in their own home. The food is less than notable, and the only thing great about the drinks is a 25% retail markup compared to any other restaurant in the area. It does not take a critic to know the difference between decent and cheap commercially frozen cheesecake. If Max’s is going to middle man entrees and desserts while charging consumers upper mid range prices, shouldn’t they at least care about the quality of what they are peddling. If your date is cheap and drunk, she will be impressed by the bill, and numb to the prepared food isle of the grocery store taste. The crowd is wannabe cool dudes, and girls that like them because they drive a luxury line of japanese automobile.
First & Last is one of the few restaurants still left in Hartford that holds great history in its walls and still puts great food on your table. Generally inexpensive (especially for the many college students living in that area), great atmosphere, great service, and always funominal food (ie. Neopolitan pizza and Antipasto). It’s a small restaurant that stands just in front of Goodwin Park. Old pictures of the city of Hartford and famous faces that have walked into the establishment cover the walls, and beautiful built-in wooden booths and old Italian restauant feel are inviting. It’s small, so if you have a large party make a reservation.
