I have had a couple of bad haircuts at this place, but for the most part I have been pleased with the results. The people are very friendly and always have a good story to tell. The location on Melrose is great. I recommend this place for a nice, affordable haircut.Pros + People Watching, good value

I met Chevonne Moore in 2003 and the moment she laid her hands on my hair that was it. No one has touched these locks since. She listens, is attentive, has a vision of what works not only with your natural features of your face and style, but also with what type of hair you have naturally. Which is great because no matter what cut I get, I know I will always be able to have a fashionable hair style with a wash and wear; leaving the one hour styling in the dust. In the 7 years I have followed Chevonne people consistently give me compliments about my hair and really they all go to her. Lets just put it this way; when I got married in Italy I immediately booked her a ticket to not only do my hair but all my peeps in the wedding too. I am by no means rich, in fact far from it. However, I would skip meals to make sure I can go have her work her magic on my hair! Thanks as always Doll, you rock! Pros + professional, attentive, chic, easy appt it’s an experience! Cons – LA is

What I love about this salon is it really knows how to deal with red hair—whether it is natural or just the color you want to be. After a bad experience at Frederic Fekkai–“We just don’t do a lot of redheads” the stylist there told me when I went back to have my too-bright roots dealt with–I came to Modem and have been a monthly customer ever since. The stylists here have given me every shade of red I have desired over the past few years–strawberry blonde, bright red, brownish red. They take the time to listen to what you have to say and, unlike at so many other salons, they focus on what they are doing rather than getting distracted. Word to the wise: a haircut here can take a while to do. At first I wondered what was taking so long. Later I realized they work meticulously and really think about how the haircut will change in the weeks to come after you have left the salon. I appreciate that dedication.Pros + Attentive service, friendly staff, independently owned, neighborhood

If you want to have your hair colored by a woman who knows her stuff, go see Emily at Steam. She is a bi-costal hair colorist who works in both New York and Los Angeles. I have tried to find a colorist who was both creative AND could give me the natural, fun, yet stylish look I have wanted for years. After going to Emily, I ended up with the color I have been searching for! She is amazing–she knows exactly how hair will react to color and spends a lot of time consulting with you before you get your first color from her–I felt like she was a mind-reader. Very professional and nice as well. Every penny spent on my hair has been worth it. As long as I am in L.A., I will NOT let anyone else color my hair.Pros + cutting-edge, yet affordable, not a "trendy-so-they-don’t care-about-you" type salonCons – none–my color from Emily was amazing
