There are about 70 million people who speak Tamil. The Tamil language is the state language of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu (i.e. Madras) where 65 Million speakers live. It is also spoken in Sri Lanka by about 3 million speakers, in Malaysia by about 1 million speakers and in Fiji, Guyana, Mauritius, Singapore, Trinidad and Tobago, and some parts of East Africa in lesser numbers.
