Where is Sul Ross State University Located?
Sul Ross State University is located in the West Texas town of Alpine. Situated on the edge of the Chihuahuan Desert and surrounded by mountains, Alpine has the appearance of a tree filled oasis sitting in a huge valley. Alpine is a remote rural community located approximately 200 miles east of El Paso and 140 southwest of the Odessa-Midland. Alpine is close to major tourist sites which include Big Bend National Park (85 miles to the south), McDonald Observatory (35 miles to the north), Guadalupe National Park (140 miles to the northwest), and Fort Davis National Historical Site (26 miles north of Alpine). Alpine has a population of approximately 6,179. The city is situated at an elevation of 4,481 feet and has an average rainfall of 16-17 inches per year. The surrounding area includes rolling prairie, arid desert, rugged mountains, and lots and lots of cactus.
