Where is IDOLATRY mentioned the first time?
What is IDOLATRY, exactly? Where is it defined in the Torah? Weve been learning about IDOLATRY form the First of the Ten Commandments of Moses on Sinai. We need to recognize, however, that Moses spoke to Israel rather than to BN; as HaSHem says I am YHVH your ELoKiM Who took you out of Egypt. Israel had the misfortune of being enslaved to Egypt, and the fortune to be redeemed of it. BN in contrast have never been enslaved to anyone. Hence the Ten Commandments are a private letter from Hashem to Israel. Hence, one may argue, the IDOLATRY Commandment as seen in the Ten Commandments is relevant to Israel only. And yet, the Talmud (Sanhedrin) says that Every Commandment that was given to Noah and was later repeated by Moses to Israel is applicable to both BN and Israel. Accordingly, the Seven Commandments pertain to both BN and Israel since they were given to both. IDOLATRY, therefore, was given to Adam and Noah then repeated by Moses to Israel.
