Fort Hood is located 60 miles northwest of Austin and about 63 Miles Southwest of Waco. The town of Killeen is almost completely engulfed by the fort’s southern boundary. In 1950, Congress designated the then Camp Hood as Fort Hood, the home of III CORPS, and a permanent installation. Fort Hood’s growth into the country’s largest military installation has directly influenced Killeen’s and Harker Heights’ development. Currently, Fort Hood has a military population of about 42,000 soldiers and their family members. Figure1.
