Where is economic benefit of Adirondack Railroad?
I was pleased to see the Sentinel attention to the Adirondack Travel Corridor (the Railroad ). Every time the subject is presented, there are more questions than answers generated. Some points I would like to make: The Adirondack Scenic Railroad operates on the state-owned Remsen-Lake Placid so-called Travel Corridor and while their ridership shows some increase after falling to nearly half its best year, much of that has been generated by theme trains which do not operate even as far as Old Forge. My problem is that the ridership is a “so what.” Where is the economic benefit to the area (the taxpayer owners of the corridor)? Where are the jobs, who are the customers and what would the other possible uses generate? Rail fans have their statistics, snowmobilers have theirs and I am sure other groups could put their spin on it, but the proof is in the pudding, so the survey to businesses is intended to paint the economic picture from as neutral a position as possible.
