We chose to host the system in the US because this reduces the costs significantly, while also placing the server geographically closer to the area we guessed would have the largest number of users, thus helping to increase performance. What software is powering Dear Diary? • We use: • Linux is the operating system. We use Fedora Core Linux • MySQL 4.0 is the Relational Database System. • Apache 2.0 is the web server. • PHP 4 is one of our development programming languages. We make intensive use of the Smarty PHP Template Engine in our newer code. The newer pages are developed using VS.PHP. If you have Visual Studio.Net and want to develop using PHP then check it out.
