LA MIRADA – Special teams and a balanced offense lifted La Mirada High School’s football team to a 44-3 first-round victory over Santa Ana in the CIF-Southern Section South Division playoffs Friday night. After Santa Ana took a 3-0 second-quarter lead on Luis Diaz’s 22-yard field goal, La Mirada quickly responded with Aaryn Bouzos’ 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. It was the second consecutive game in which Bouzos returned a kickoff for a score. From that point, the host Matadores dominated. La Mirada quarterback Daniel Poncedeleon was efficient, connecting on 11 of 17 passes for 172 yards and two scores. Max Gama and J.T. Torres paced the Matadores’ ground attack, rushing for 71 and 57 yards, respectively. Torres scored two touchdowns for the Suburban League champions. After Bouzos’ touchdown, Torres increased La Mirada’s lead to 14-3 when he scored on a 1-yard run.
