He began as the “Urban Spaceman” in the Bonzo Dog (Doo-Dah) Band, a very silly and offbeat group fond of frightening but comical visual performances. Befriending Paul McCartney they appeared in the Beatles film “Magical Mystery Tour,” and befriending, among others, Eric Idle, they appeared on the also rather frightening children’s comedy program “Do Not Adjust Your Set,” the cast of which would evolve into Monty Python.
