Where Is Byker Grove?
Byker Grove is a popular BBC children’s TV drama that has been running for 17 years. It is set in the Byker area of Newcastle at a youth club called “Byker Grove”. Thee series was created by Adele Rose although was actually the idea of TV executive Andrea Wonfor who was involved in the creation of the show. Andrea was one of Britain’s most talented TV executives. She was Granada TV’s first female Director of Programmes in 1993 and was joint Managing Director from 1994 until 1999. The creation of Byker Grove was one of her many achievements during a career that lasted for 37 years. When she died of breast cancer in September 2004, the final episode of the 2004 season of Byker Grove was dedicated to her memory. Byker Grove started in 1989 and depicts the lives of children aged 11 – 16 as they grow up in Newcastle. It has over the years tackled some controversial storylines and has never shied away from tackling serious topics. These have included drug addiction, child abuse, homelessness
