Where in Germany is best for christmas markets?
Cologne has three large Christmas Markets. The Neumarkt is the biggest and it’s surrounded by tram lines so getting in and out can be interesting if you’ve had too much gluwien. Berlin has about 60 Christmas Markets. The largest is Spandau. It takes over almost all of the Old Town. You can easily spend three hours here (and lots of €), with loads to eat and drink at about one in five of the stalls. One of the most picturesque in Berlin is the Rixdorf Christmas market (at Neukolln in the southern part of the city). It only happens on the second weekend of Advent (which is mostly the second weekend of December). This Rixdorf market is very special and unlike most of the rest, which tend to merge into a common blend in the mind after you’ve visited a few. The stalls are not the ‘chain stalls’ which appear at many of the larger markets; they’re predominantly private traders.
