My Haverhill Barney Gallagher Published: October 4, 2009 Sometimes I wonder on a nice autumn afternoon, when the air is crisp and the sun is bright: What happened to Haverhill High football after the glory days of my youth. I had one thought a short while ago when I saw folks on Water Street, walking back and forth, carrying cold sodas and being really animated, but that was at boat races on the river. What that did was remind me of the days when hundreds of people, maybe a thousand or more, would walk all the way from White’s Corner at Basiliere Bridge to the stadium to go to a football game. Not only did we walk to that place, but we had a good time doing it, even knowing we had to walk back after the game. That would have been in the mid-1930s, when Haverhill High was either the state champion or a strong contender. The high school football teams of other cities would look forward to coming to Haverhill, if only for the prestige of playing Haverhill, and the stadium would be overflo
