They seem to be in Vermont, mostly. It is a state with strong ideas of personal “freedom.” Woodstock is there and, although, there is a mature stable community in that town, the memory of the gathering so many years ago remains. Many older hippies have stores in towns with merchandise reminiscent of the 60’s and 70’s. Others are living in cohousing (in many parts of the US and around the world) or in modern versions of communal living. (Not all cohousing members are old hippies — many simply have the dream of cooperative living and mutuality of decisionmaking. Besides, cohousing living units are considerably more expensive than homes in surrounding communities and one must have a good source of income to afford to live there. Perhaps it is a more mature vision of the hippie dream.) Drug use is not as prevalent in the modern hippie movement as it was with the “free” 60’s groups. Many have died of overdoses or AIDS from shared needles and “free” sex… Marijuana it is still a widespread
